July, 2004:

When it All Gets Too Hard

Most of us get to the point where we think ‘enough is enough’.

When something major happens we can often think – quite legitimately – that it’s time to call it quits.

That’s why stories like that of Lance Armstrong coming back from cancer to win the Tour de France more times than anyone else in the history of the event are so inspiring. Those stories tell us that God has put something inside us that gives us the ability to fight against the odds. (Lance’s doctors thought he had extremely little chance of living yet alone ever cycling again.)

Perhaps not so dramatic but inspiring nevertheless is this story about Robbie McEwan, the winner of the Green Jersey in the 2004 Tour de France.

McEwen went to a Dutch hospital today for an X-ray and cat scan which revealed the fractures, known as transverse process.

“Today was the first chance I found time to go to the hospital and I have to say I was relieved to hear the diagnosis because it explains why I was in so much pain in agony for much of the Tour,” he said.

“The two fractures are in the bones which are like little wings that come off your vertebrae,” he said.

Apparently he rode most of the gruelling 3 week race with a broken back. He rode up some of the steepest climbs in the world and didn’t just survive – he shone. Now the race is over is he going to take time out to let his back heal? No – he’s now preparing for the Olympics.

I have no doubt that people like this are absolutely driven and that we don’t all have the same ability to deal with adversity but I think we can learn a lot about the human spirit from these guys.

I'm Soaked

My ride to work this morning was a soggy affair.

We don’t get nearly enough rain in Perth so I don’t mind it too much. Riding in the rain can be fun. (Though I can name at least a few times when it hasn’t been.)

I wonder about the difference between my commute and all those motorists I see on the way.

They have rushed from their houses to their cars - trying to stay dry in the process. They’ve then made their way through extra slow traffic – being extra careful due to the ‘dangerous’ conditions. Once at their destination they’ve tried to dash to their offices without getting wet again. The rain has been an inconvenience.

On the other hand – I have had an exhilarating adventure and felt like a kid playing in the rain as I doged puddles and flew along on my bike.

Now I need to get out of my wet cycling gear and hang it to dry so that I can get it all wet again on my way home tonight. Yipeeee!

Number One Cyclist in the World

James was looking over my shoulder at a picture of 6 time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, on the computer this morning.

Knowing that Lance wore the number ’1′ on his jersey during the race James asked why he had number 1.

I flippantly told him that it is because Lance is the number 1 cyclist in the world.

Without hesitation James said, “But I think that you’re the number 1 cyclist in the world.”

I know I’m not – but he’s definitely the number 1 boy in the world.

My Baby's Back!

Our Emily returned home safe and sound on Tuesday night. She’s only 8 years old but she’s been travelling to England and France with Pauline’s mum for the past 5 weeks.

There’s been lots of hugs and sharing stories. James is over the moon that his big sister is back. He was so excited that she was returning we couldn’t keep him still.

I’m quite jealous that Emily got to watch the final stage of the Tour de France but she brought me back lots of souvenirs including an official yellow jersey.

My Voice is in Cyberspace

I only noticed yesterday that my voice agents, Actors Management, have put a snippet of my voice over work on-line for prospective clients to hear. I don’t get a lot of work through them but every now and then I get a call to do an hour or two. It’s great work when I get it.

Click here if you want to listen.
