March, 2006:

Spectator or player?

It’s begun. The AFL season has begun and for the next few months we’ll hear about football, football and more football.

It’s time for all the armchair critics to surface once again. Thousands of people who have watched endless games of footy on TV will come up with better game strategies than all the coaches and players.

Funny how we all suddenly become experts when we’re on the sidelines. It’s always easy to see how things can be done better and criticise those who are actually out there having a go. Why would we want to put ourselves on the line and actually do something when we find it so much easier to stay where we are and find fault?

Of course that kind of attitude isn’t just reserved for football or other sports. We see it happening in every area of life don’t we?

Those in public office need to be kept accountable but so often those trying to call our leaders to account have never bothered themselves with trying to do something to benefit the wider community themselves.

We like to criticise people in all kinds of leadership roles but we’re often less keen to take on the responsibilities that leaders accept. Whether it’s at work, sporting clubs, churches or anywhere else, there are always those who will be prepared to give of their wisdom but not so many who will give of their time, resources and efforts.

Life isn’t a spectator sport. If you want to be one of the ones making the rules and deciding on directions, get onto the field and get involved. But beware, once you start playing you need to be ready to face the spectators who invariably think they know better.

What's the story?

Jocelyn left a comment a few posts back to say, “Rodney, can you leave a link (maybe you already have?) to your posts about India? I was “off the map” I think when you were away so I’ve missed out on why you went and what happened – all I’ve read about was your trip to the crazy sculpture place that you posted about several weeks ago.”

Always happy to oblige, Jocelyn.

Last year’s trip happened in February and March. 9 Australians travelled to India including 7 cyclists, a support crew of one and a video producer. We were away for around three weeks and I wrote as much as I could while we were there.

You can find the posts I wrote in the archives for February 2005 and March 2005.

This post from January this year focusses a little more on the reason for last year’s trip.

I’ll look at finding somewhere to put a 3 minute video of our trip in the next couple of days so that you can see us in action.

Squatters

Here in Australia we’d sit on a wall but things are different in India. Squatting seems to be the order of the day.

This picture was taken by another one of our team members as we cycled out of Karnal on our trip from Delhi to Chandigarh last year.

There had just been an election in the area and so there was a lot happening in the streets. People were celebrating the win of their favoured candidate. It was a noisy affair with a lot of colour.

These gentlemen were watching the events of the day unfold from their vantage point on top of a wall. I don’t think my balance would be good enough to perch on top of a wall for any amount of time but then again I’ve never tried it.

I guess we’ve all experienced that moment when we’ve realised that the wall or seat we’ve been sitting on wasn’t quite as clean as we first thought and we’ve walked away with someting nasty on our clothing. Squatting on a wall may just be the answer.

Say cheese

A local business is offering great prices on printing digital photos so I’ve been going through the hundreds of photos from my trip to India in February and March last year.

There are so many pictures and so many stories to tell. As I look through my photos to decide which I should get printed, the memories come flooding back.

This photo (click the picture for a better look) was taken at the end of a long day of cycling. We had visited a lot of churches as we battled through the Indian city traffic. Outside the last church we had visited for the day, bikes were being packed into trucks and many of the young people who had cycled with us were saying there goodbyes. A few of us had cameras out to capture the moment.

As we stood on the road outside a few of the local children decided to see what all the fuss was about. This boy and his sister seemed very pleased to see us and though we didn’t speak the same language they let us know that they wanted their photo taken too. They were delighted to be able to see themselves on the LCD screen on the back of the camera.
