Do you have a back yard lemon tree? I was looking at ours the other day when I was out mowing the lawn. When we planted it some years ago it was quite small but it has certainly grown and is producing heaps of lemons.
We don’t use a lot of lemons but I’m still thrilled when I see it producing fruit. There’s something special about being part of the process.
I’m a hopeless gardener but I do water the tree and throw it some fertiliser now and then. Pauline prunes it when it needs a snip. The kids enjoy collecting the lemons.
What is it about seeing that tree’s fruit develop that puts a smile on my face? I guess with my record as a gardener I just enjoy seeing something that’s not a weed flourishing in our yard.

YES! We do have one and I love mine too. Can I share a short story about my tree? I currently live in the same house I grew up in. When we moved here 30 years ago my parents let each of us pick a fruit tree to plant. I chose lemon, my brother chose peach and my sister chose plum. I am proud to say my tree is the only one stil standing and producing after all these years!
So what’s it like living in the house where you grew up?
I sometimes wish I could afford to buy the house where I grew up and renovate it. Unfortunately prices in that area have skyrocketed and the house is only really fit to be knocked down.
I also know that it really wouldn’t be the same.
I feel the same way when I see a new leaf in my plants. I am not too much of a gardener myself, but I guess it is not about that. Perhaps it is the thrill of seeing LIFE in action, perhaps it is our respect for CREATION.
I wish we had a lemon tree. We’ve resorted to stealing (using abandoned fruit?) from willing neighbours!
Here’s a good way to use up your lemons. Mix a cup of suger in a cup of hot water in a 2l jug until dissolved. Squeeze 4 lemons (or a mix of lemons and grapefruit), add the juice, a handful of crushed fresh mint and top up with ice and water. Stir well – the hot water will cool and the mint will diffuse. Drink on a hot day – it’s awesome!

Living in the house I grew up with is kind of weird since my mom still lives in it too! But our house is seperated in a way that my son and I have part of it pretty much to ourselves and we share the kitchen, etc. with her. The weird thing is my son going to all the schools I went to when I was a kid and some of the same teachers are there and remember my last name!! (its uncommon)
