Farewell Aunty Jack

OK. I admit it. I took the entire family to see Aunty Jack Show and Tell at the Perth Concert Hall last night.

Some may consider that it wasn’t a show for kids. After all, The Aunty Jack Show certainly raised lots of eyebrows when it was first aired in the early 70s. Watching it these days on DVD I can’t imagine why. About the most offensive part of the show was the occasional use of a word that the Australian Government is now using to try to lure tourists to our wide brown land.

The evening was a wonderful trip through the comedic talents of the Aunty Jack Show’s two main characters, Aunty Jack and Thin Arthur, played by Grahame Bond and Rory O’Donoghue. I’ve always been captured by their clever comedy writing and absolutely amazed by their musical talent.

Grahame and Rory played guitar, sang, recounted their rise to prominence, reminisced and introduced a lot of video clips showing segments of the shows and other related material. It was great to see a very early clip of Grahame with Hollywood film director, Peter Weir, singing the very original version of ‘Ants’.

To cap off a marvellous evening we got to head backstage after the show to meet the guys. They were both absolutely charming and it was a real pleasure to spend a few minutes chatting with them. (You can click on the picture for a closer look.)

  • RODNEY!

Your family is stunning! Your daughter is exceptionally beautiful, I am sure you know that 🙂

    Souns like a fun night.

  • You reckon my daughter’s beautiful? So do I and I tell her often but as you can see by the photo of Pauline, it’s fairly obvious where she gets her looks. 🙂

  • I’ve never heard of Aunty Jack, and I’m curious how someone ends up with the name “Aunty” when they are clearly male?

    Your family is beautiful!

Thanks for the kind words! I might cut back a bit on my blog blog, but the questions will keep on rolling!

  • Rodney,
I think your kids get their good looks from you and wife. Who are the other 2 good looking guys…granpas from both sides?

  • Hello Khrystene – Thanks for dropping in. I found your blog through a technorati tag on your Aunty Jack post.

Indigo, always good to hear from you. Aunty Jack was a creation of Grahame Bond. He wore a big blue dress with one golden glove. A lot of the humour came from a character that was so obvioulsy masculine. (Moustache and all.)

Hello Jan – Thank you for your wonderful comment. On the left in the photo is Grahame Bond, on the right is Rory O’Donoghue. They’re the two main characters from the Aunty Jack Show.
