Yesterday my favourite AFL team, West Coast Eagles, lost. Western Australia’s other AFL team, Fremantle Dockers, lost. My favourite WAFL team, Swan Districts, lost. It was a wonderful day for Aussie Rules Football.

With all those losses, how can I say it was a wonderful day for football? James kicked his first ever Auskick goal.

While this is his first season of Auskick, the majority of kids he plays with have been playing for two or three seasons already so many have developed much greater skills. That doesn’t stop James from always being close to the ball. I am amazed at how hard he runs whenever the ball is in his area. His concentration on the ball is incredible. If an opposition player gets the ball, James is always there to put pressure on them. While he was playing in defence on Saturday he managed to ensure that goals were kept to a minimum.

Once he was moved forward, he kept at the ball until his opportunity came. He grabbed the ball then took off towards the goal before kicking a six pointer.

Several of his team mates gave him a pat on the back and helped him celebrate. I was glad I was wearing sunnies because it would have probably looked a little odd for a grown man to be getting teary over a footy game of 7 and 8 year olds.
