Looking past rejection

Phil Cooke has recently published a great post about Rebecca Webb Carranza.

She was a factory worker who saw potential in what others rejected. Her vision helped her create a whole new niche in the food industry which in turn led her to running the company where she worked.

I wonder what potential remains undiscovered in the things around us or more importantly in the people around us. What potential remains undiscovered in us? I wonder if there’s something in us that we still haven’t noticed – something that will stay hidden until someone with vision and insight happens to notice something that we haven’t.

I remember a boss I had many years ago who gave me a number of tasks that were well beyond my capabilities – or so I thought. The confidence that she showed in me and her belief that I could rise to the task, without much supervision, made me think that I might just be able to achieve something. I took the tasks on and was surprised to find some untapped potential.

Has anyone ever given you a job that was too big? Have you ever seen the potential in someone else?
