Looking past rejection

Phil Cooke has recently published a great post about Rebecca Webb Carranza.

She was a factory worker who saw potential in what others rejected. Her vision helped her create a whole new niche in the food industry which in turn led her to running the company where she worked.

I wonder what potential remains undiscovered in the things around us or more importantly in the people around us. What potential remains undiscovered in us? I wonder if there’s something in us that we still haven’t noticed – something that will stay hidden until someone with vision and insight happens to notice something that we haven’t.

I remember a boss I had many years ago who gave me a number of tasks that were well beyond my capabilities – or so I thought. The confidence that she showed in me and her belief that I could rise to the task, without much supervision, made me think that I might just be able to achieve something. I took the tasks on and was surprised to find some untapped potential.

Has anyone ever given you a job that was too big? Have you ever seen the potential in someone else?

  • Hey! I know Phil! I worked with him on a project (film of course) years ago, he’s a great guy. Do you always read his blog? I marked it to read again. Thanks, Rodney! It makes me wonder about some other people I used to work with…do they have blogs? I am going to look!

  • At work I’m a mentor. People can ask for a mentor for many reasons – career development, help with a problems at work. I love it when someone is successful and you have seen them grow in confidence.

  • Hey Barbara, I’ve been reading Phil’s blog for a while now. He’s got some interesting things to say. I hope you manage to catch up with him.

Crofty, it’s always wonderful to have a part to play in someone else’s success. I trained a part time announcer for our radio station and I love hearing her on-air. She sounds great and while I know that that’s due to her talent and hard work, it’s nice to know I helped her along the journey.

Jennifer, you continue to show just how much you can achieve no matter what life throws at you.
