I proved to everyone in the office last year that I’m hopeless at footy tipping. This year I intend to prove it to the world.

I promise that by the time the season ends I’ll have come up with a reasonable prize for the best tipster.
Some people spend ages checking the form of each side and thinking through the match ups, the ground, the ladder and a whole range of variables before tipping. I tend to just go ahead and choose then hope for the best.
The great thing with footytips.com.au is that you can be part of more than one competition at a time. I was alerted to the possibilities by Geoff so I’ve joined his competition too.

Every couple of weeks we look at what’s in the cinemas and what’s new on DVD.
Today we talked about the new Adam Sandler movie, Reign Over Me.
In the movie, Sandler’s character is a man who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City. The grief he experiences is crippling and has left him living a strange, reclusive existence. He runs into his old college roommate played by Don Cheadle. Renewing their friendship is the one thing that begins to help the man recover from his grief.
The movie has Sandler playing a very straight, dramatic role rather than his usual bumbling comedy parts. Not all the critics have been kind to him but many have had a lot of good things to say about his acting in Reign Over Me.

How else can I describe the inaugural Hearing Aid family concert in Supreme Court Gardens on Sunday?
The Ear Science Institute Australia, a not-profit-organisation, organised the family event to fund vital medical research into ear and hearing disorders. After some initial audio problems, which the organisers handled extremely well, the concert got underway and featured over four hours of music from acts as diverse as the Rogue Traders, the Hooley Dooleys and Courtney Murphy with his band Murphy’s Lore.
I must admit that my favourite part of the event was seeing Ross Wilsonperforming live with his band the Urban Legends. Ross is certainly getting older, an affliction not unique to him alone, but he has lost none of the sound that put him on the top of Australia’s musical charts with his bands Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock. He’s still got the moves too.
He played some of his solo stuff but mainly stuck to favourites including Come Back Again, Hi Honey Ho, Bom Bom, Come Said the Boy, Summer of ’81 and several others before finishing with the song that was the inspiration for Elton John’s Crocodile Rock, Eagle Rock.
No party in Australia is complete without Eagle Rock pumping through the speakers so it was a fitting finale for Ross Wilson and the Urban Legends.

As for the rest of the show, it was great to see Courtney Murphy performing live. At one point during his set he invited Fremantle Docker, Luke McPharlin, took to the stage and sang a couple of songs. He did quite reasonable versions of How to Save a Life and You Can Call Me Al.
The final band to take to the stage was the headline act, Rogue Traders. According to ten year old Emily, this was the act we’d all come to see. Iwasn’t quite convinced.
I listened to them and tried to enjoy their music but it all seemed to be ‘just noise’. I listened to the guitarist – he’s extremely talented. The drummer – brilliant. Keyboards – very good. Natalie Bassingthwaighte’s vocals – excellent. Even with all those great elements it just didn’t work for me. I did enjoy a couple of their songs but for the most part I couldn’t see what the fuss was about.
I was wondering about my lack of enthusiasm when it hit me. It wasn’t about them, it was about me. There comes a time in every man’s life when he becomes his father. In the same way that my musical choices sounded like ‘just noise’ to my dad, the kind of music that Emily chooses to listen to sounds the same way to me. Make no mistake, the guys in Rogue Traders are a great band, I’m just getting older.

A survey by Ed Stetsker shows that a lot of people are thinking about Heaven a lot of the time.
They may not be thinking about the Christian idea of Heaven but it seems that a lot of us are often wondering about what lies beyond the grave. Do we go on to some kind of paradise? Do we become spirits that continue to hang around here on earth? Can we truly know what we’ll encounter when we pass from this life?
When people we know pass away we talk about them going to a better place. Is that what we truly believe? Is there a better place waiting for us?

Yesterday we talked about the subject of Heaven and our yearning for something more than this life offers. Is it just a yearning based on a wish? Is it simply that we don’t want to believe that it’s all over when it’s over?
Are you into camping, fishing and hiking? Do you enjoy waking up amongst wildlife?
We’re getting closer to Easter and here in Australia that means it’s the traditional time to advertise camping gear. We get a four day weekend and thousands of families take advantage of the last remnants of good weather before winter to take to the great outdoors.
We got a camping store’s Huge Easter Sale catalogue with the newspaper today.
I browse through the catalogues and it all looks so good. Those fancy tents, all the marvelous accessories, camping lights, camping stoves, mattresses, sleeping bags, fishing gear and so much more. There are things that fold up and fold out, portable toilets, solar showers, handheld GPS units and it all calls out for the reader to set of on the adventure of a lifetime.
Everything looks so colourful and exciting and the people in the catalogue all seem so happy to be enjoying their camping experience.
The only thing missing from the catalogue seems to be the one item that I think would be essential on a camping trip. What I’d like to see is a small backpack that you can cart with you to the camping spot of your choice. Once you’re there you simply pull the tab and it folds out into a 5 star hotel with room service.
