I need a volunteer

A civilisation flourishes when people plant trees under whose shade they will never sit. (Greek Proverb)

It’s often easy to do things that benefit the people who we know and love but it can be more difficult to get involved in activities that make the world a better place for people we may never even meet.

Life Skills Trainer, Jill Bonanno, joined me this morning on 98.5 Sonshine FM for our regular Friday morning radio segment, Simply Living. We started a conversation, which we’ll continue next week, about volunteering.

I’ve been involved in volunteering in a number of ways throughout my life and I always find that I recieve so much benefit from doing things that benefit others.

What’s your experience of being a volunteer? Are you regularly involved in being a volunteer? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section of this post.

You can hear the discussion I had with Jill by clicking here.

  • I have done a lot of volunteering in my 64 years, everything from working in a homeless shelter, to hosting foreign students, to helping women breastfeed their infants, among other things, and now feeding orphaned puppies for the local animal rescue organization. Volunteering always gives more to the volunteer than to those being served, I think. My 87 year old mother works in an op shop which raises funds for cancer patients and it is what keeps her young.

  • I commented on this yesterday, but it must’ve deleted it, my web browser was acting fishy.

I once volunteered by painting a daycare for mothers and families on welfare. In the middle of the painting, there was a tornado warning and we had to bring about 50 young chilren and infants to the basement and sing to them and rock them to sleep. It was an unforgettable experience to say the least.

  • Very interesting, Bev, to hear that your mother is still volunteering. I suppose her willingness to help others is a big part in your decision to be so generous with your time.

Lauren, your story is another one of those that reminds us how much we ourselves receive when we start giving others a hand.
