Headed for the cells

No matter what happens I will maintain my innocence.

I have done nothing to deserve this.

On Friday morning the 27th of April I will be locked in a prison cell.

My freedom will depend on you.

More later.

The family returns

I got my family back last night.

Pauline, Emily and James headed south on Monday to stay with friends in Busselton. That meant that I had the house to myself and could live life at my own pace for a few days. I love my family desperately but a couple of days to myself every now and then is not a bad thing.

My musical taste isn’t always appreciated by everyone in our home so on Tuesday night I spent some time relaxing with a couple of Diana Krall CDs cranked up on the stereo. Very relaxing.

On Wednesday evening I headed out to the blogger meetup.

A short return to being a bachelor was quite enjoyable. Mind you, I’m more than happy to have everyone home again. It’s refreshing to be reminded what single life is like every once in a while but I’d choose family life over being single any day.

Meetup

I finally did it.

I’ve been promising myself for months that I’d get along to a Perth Weblogger Meetup. I finally made it last night.

There was around a dozen bloggers who met at the Brass Monkey Pub in Northbridge. I’m hopeless at turning up at places alone when I don’t know anyone but it was relatively painless. Great people and a great evening.

The next Meetup is on at the same place, same time on Wednesday evening the 16th of May.

Strangely enough it turned out to be more of a Twitter Meetup than a Blogger Meetup. While I’d seen evidence of something called Twitter existing through other blogs, I hadn’t really paid it much attention. Keeping a running tally of everything you’re doing throughout the day didn’t really grab me as a wonderful idea.

Peer pressure is an interesting thing. As soon as I got home from the Meetup last night I created my own Twitter account and I’ve spent today leaving a trail of activities online for my new Twitter friends to read. I’ll give it a few days and see if I get addicted.

Reducing the nuclear threat

Felicity Hill is the coordinator of the new campaign of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons or ICAN.

ICAN is being launched in 60 countries around the world this month, including Australia. The goal of the campaign is a Nuclear Weapons Convention, a treaty to progressively eliminate nuclear weapons, similar to the treaties that have successfully banned landmines and chemical weapons.

You can find out more about the work she’s doing by clicking here.

Felicity joined me this morning during my radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM and we looked at just how achievable the campaign’s goals are. You can listen to our conversation using the media player below.

Responding to tragedy

How have you responded to the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech?

Being half a world away here in Australia doesn’t leave us unaffected by the actions of the gunman. Our hearts go out to the wounded and the families who have lost loved ones.

Our thoughts now turn to the security of our own families. If it could happen there it could happen to those we love. How do we protect those closest to us? Thankfully our gun laws in Australia mean that guns are not as readily available, meaning that we have far, far fewer gun deaths per capita than in the U.S. but all it takes is one gun and one person to pull the trigger.

My regular Wednesday morning guest on 98.5 Sonshine FM is Ross Clifford who is the Principal of Morling College in New South Wales and current President of the Baptist Union of Australia. Each week we chat about a range of issues relating to spirituality and belief.

Today we talked about the events at Virginia Tech, about the heroes who fought to save others, about our response to the tragedy and where God was as people’s lives were being violently ripped away from them.
