Musical meme

Crofty has tagged me to list seven tracks or albums that feature in my life at present.

Mmm. I have such eclectic music tastes that such a task proves difficult but I’ll give it a go and nominate some specific tracks.

I’ll start with a couple of songs that I’m playing during my morning radio programme at the moment that I’m really enjoying.

The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani and Better by Regina Spektor are different enough from so many of the current releases to make them a real joy to play. I enjoy music that takes chances and both these tracks fit that description.

Another song that I’ve been playing on air lately is Beautiful As You by The Whitlams. Pauline bought me the CD a long time before the song was released as a single so I was very pleased when our Programme Director chose to add it to our playlist. I know that it’s about a city but whenever I hear the line, “Nothing’s to me, as beautiful as you” I can’t help but think of Pauline.

OK. We’ve got three. Just four more to go. Umm. Maybe I should choose a few songs that I’ve recently listened to on my way to and from work. When I cycle I put in the ear buds, set my iPod Mini on shuffle and enjoy the ride.

This is Not America by David Bowie has come up a couple of times lately. Brilliant. Speaking of Bowie, have you heard Rebel Rebel from the bonus disc of Reality, his album from a few years back? It’s wonderful. Quite different from the original version and sounds great when it’s turned up LOUD. (Though I don’t turn my iPod up very loud.) Well that’s two more.

Back to the iPod ‘Recently Played’ list. Take Me to Your Leader by The Newsboys got a playing a day or so ago. Great song from when the band was at its best. These Dreams of You from Van Morrison’s classic Moondance got a playing recently too. The whole album’s wonderful.

That’s seven but I could go on for quite a while. Looking through my ‘Recently Played’ list there’s stuff by The Call, Bob Dylan, Everything But The Girl, Charlie Peacock, Rick Springfield, Elvis Costello, GANGgajang, Lou Reed, Maria, McKee and so many others. On top of that I’ve been listening to Diana Krall albums as I’ve sat at the computer this evening.

Oh well. That’ll do it for now.

What are the songs or albums that are featuring in your life at the moment? Feel free to list your choices on your own blog or in the comments section below.

Thinking Blogger Award

I feel so very honoured.

Vicki from Words has bestowed the Thinking Blogger Award upon me. It’s nice to know that there are people who appreciate what I write and that some of my posts can get a few thoughts ticking over.

Having been nominated I now need to nominate five blogs that make me think. Tough call. There are so many bloggers that get me thinking but here are just five of them.

1 Martha Martha

2 Idle Rambling Thoughts

3 bobfranquiz.com

4 The Gaslight Gospel

5 Moved Mountains

If you didn’t make the list, please don’t be offended. I could have nominated 50 instead of just 5. If you are on the list, thank you for your blog and your thoughts.

I’ve emailed those I’ve nominated to let them know what they need to do next should they choose to nominate the blogs that get them thinking.

Watching the future

Would you like to shape the future?

I guess all of us would like to put our own spin on which way the world is heading in one way or the other.

Television plays such a big part in so many lives and so having input into the way we watch the box can make a difference to our world.

Murdoch University is conducting research into our television watching habits and interactive television.

TV Panel gives you the opportunity to take part in research that may help shape the way we watch and interact with television in the future. They regularly ask people in the Perth area to fill out internet surveys and occasionally visit the university to be part of their studies.

There are rewards for helping out. If you sit around and watch telly for a short while and then answer a few questions they’ll give you a $20 gift card. They’re also putting panel members into the draw for a new generation video iPod valued at $449.

Pauline and I have been part of the panel for quite some time.

If you live in the Perth metro area and would like to know more, just visit the TV Panel website.

America's worst campus shooting

32 people are dead at a university in Virginia following the worst school shooting in U.S. history.

In the coming days there will be time to look at the reasons behind the shooting and discussions about gun ownership, but today we need to pray for the many who are injured and the families of those who have lost their lives.

Stuey who?

Have you ever been told a secret that is such good news that you wish you could tell everyone and let them join in the celebrations?

You’re so excited but you can’t share that excitement with everyone else.

That’s a bit how I’m feeling at the moment.

As I mentioned in my last post, Stuart O’Grady has become the first Australian to win the grueling Paris-Roubaix one day road cycling classic. To most people it’s no big deal, so even though it’s no secret, there’ll be no dancing in the streets.

For a cyclist like myself, who realises the importance of the win, I’m left wanting to shout it from the roof tops but it doesn’t really do much for anyone else around here. It’s like having your team win a grand final.

Stuey will be the toast of Europe but he’s unlikely to be front page news in his home country. I do hope he gets the recognition he so richly deserves.

I’ve managed to SMS one of my cycling friends who’s also pretty excited about it. I guess it’ll be the hot topic over coffee on Saturday morning after our weekly ride.
