The Secret

We all love secrets. We all want to believe that somewhere, someone has a secret key that will make life work better.

We want to believe that there’s a secret to so many areas of our lives. We want a key, a pill, some kind of simple solution to the complexities of the things that face us each day.

Anyone who comes up with the latest ‘weight loss secret’ is bound to pull in loads of money. All they really do is show us the ‘secret’ to fleecing people who are hoping for a quick fix. Deep down we all know that the ‘secret’ to weight loss is to eat better and excercise more but we keep holding out for a simple secret.

How do we avoid the difficulties of life? How do we make life work in our favour? How do we achieve the life we want?

According to Rhonda Byrne, there is a secret that will turn our lives around so that we can enjoy the life we’ve always dreamed about. Rhonda’s book, The Secret, has certainly turned her life around. It’s a bestseller. People around the world are scrambling to get hold of the key that will unlock a brand new life for them.

My regular Wednesday morning guest on 98.5 Sonshine FM is Ross Clifford who is the Principal of Morling College in New South Wales and current President of the Baptist Union of Australia. Each week we chat about a range of issues relating to spirituality and belief.

Today we focussed on The Secret and talked about the origins of the thoughts it contains. Far from being a secret it’s simply a re-telling of New Spirituality ideas that have been around for the past couple of decades and is derived from The New Thought Movement which is over a century old.

Apparently it’s all about the idea that we are what we think. We’re told we should visualise the things we want to attract into our lives. Could it really be that simple? Could we take this same message to people suffereing desperate poverty in developing countries? Is it really all about making our own lives better to the exclusion of others?

Similar thoughts have also been adopted by certain segments of the Christian community who follow a ‘name it and claim it’ doctrine.

Is there anything in the book that is new or helpful? Listen to my discussion with Ross by clicking here and decide for yourself. You can right click here if you’d like to save the mp3 and listen later.

Gone fishin'

When was the last time you went fishing?

I must admit that I hadn’t been fishing for many, many years before we went to Rottnest a few weeks back. I’m trying to cast my mind back far enough to remember when I would have last dangled a line. It could be 20 years or so.

While on Rotto we decided to throw a line in and see what happened. I wasn’t too enthusiastic but I thought it’d be a great experience for the kids. (They have been fishing a couple of times before but I wasn’t there at the time.)

The first day we tried I caught about ten blowies and a couple of herring. Not a great result but I must admit that I warmed to the idea of pulling the line out of the water with something other than a hook on the end. Maybe I haven’t been fishing for so long because my last attempts yielded very little.

The next time we tried, from a different jetty, I didn’t get a single blowie but I did hook several herring and a small silver bream. That was far more satisfying. Emily and James did quite well too. Pauline videoed a lot of our second fishing expedition so I may have to post some snippets some time.

I don’t know what you’re like with fish but I really don’t enjoy cleaning them or having to spend more time removing bones than eating them. I’ve now decided that I quite enjoy fishing as long as someone else is prepared to clean them, cook them and eat them. When I want a decent feed of fish I’ll head to the local fish and chip shop.

What’s your experience with fishing? I’ll never be a dedicated fisherman who takes every opportunity to grab the tackle and head towards water but I know that there are many people who are extremely serious about the whole deal. Do you manage to catch a few when you go fishing? Do you mind the cleaning and all that goes along with it?
