Missionary Man

Shh!

Don’t tell anyone but Backyard Missionary, Hamo, has decided to break his self-imposed, two year blogging exile after just six months.

At this stage the post is a one off but there is hope that he’ll return to blogging sooner than expected.

Cyber Messiah

I’ve been trawling through some old radio interviews looking for a few more bits and pieces to put up online as part of 98.5 Sonshine FM’s Audio On Demand.

Back in July last year I spoke to Bruce Grant about a brand new venture called My Internet Church. It’s a website that’s trying to connect with people who, for whatever reason, find it difficult to connect with a regular, physical church.

You can hear our discussion using the media player below.

What are your thoughts about online church? Is it a relevant alternative for those who are unable to meet with others? Is it a suitable alternative for those who can meet with others but choose not to?

Brass in pocket

I think I’ve got the heaviest wallet in the world at the moment.

It’s got all the usual junk in there – receipts, business cards, bank cards, loyalty cards, blood donor card, license and a few other bits and pieces. All those things add to wallet weight but they don’t usually weigh me down too much.

Last night I headed out to the Perth Bloggers Meetup in Northbridge. It was a wonderful evening with 15 people getting together to solve the problems or the world, or plot its downfall, I’m never sure which it is.

When it was time to go I headed to the carpark and put my ticket into the machine. It told me it only wanted a few dollars. All I had on me was a twenty dollar note. I put the note into the machine then heard the sound of metal hitting metal as it threw a heap of coins into the change bucket of the machine. I scooped out all the coins and shoveled them into my wallet.

I’m not complaining that the machine gave me the correct change, I just wish it could issue notes as well as coins.

I hope the waiter doesn’t mind a till full of coins when I head to the Royal Shalimar Indian Restaurant for lunch with a friend today.

Back in time

One of the best parts of my job is being able to talk to a range of people and to find out a little more about them and their passions.

Back in September 2004 I had the real delight of spending time on the phone with Marcia Hines.

She was wonderfully friendly and a very easy person to interview.

We discussed Australian Idol for a short time but then focussed on the album she had just released at that time, Hinesight – Songs from the Journey.

Back then she had recorded a wide range of songs from Sam Cook’s You Send Me to Donald Fagen’s IGY. There was a wonderful version of James Taylor’s Shower the People with added vocals from the late Belinda Emmett, and Ian Moss joined Marcia on the Dragon classic Sunshine.

However, the stand out track for me was her recording of When I Fall in Love. It has a wonderfully rich arrangement and her vocals are to die for. The story behind her recording of the song is touching.

I just dug the interview out of the archives and it’s now available for you to listen to with the media player below.
