Perth Royal Show

It all gets underway this Saturday.

The Perth Royal Show happens at the Claremont Showgrounds from Saturday the 29th of September until Saturday the 6th of October. 98.5 Sonshine FM will broadcast live from the show each day.

We had booked a family holiday at the time of last year’s show so I didn’t get the opportunity to be part of the fun but I’m really looking forward to presenting my morning programme from the show each day of next week. I’ll have a range of interesting guests and will probably get involved in some interesting situations. I may even end up broadcasting from the bumper cars, from the top of the ferris wheel or some other sideshow ride.

If you’re thinking of heading to the show this year, make sure you drop in to say hello. We’ll be just up the hill from Sideshow Alley, across the road from the Cat Pavillion. Click on our Perth Royal Show map to see where to find us.

I just got an email from a health product company. It was one of those advertising newsletters that I signed up for some time back.

Taking a quick look at the email I noticed a promotion for a give away. Woo Hoo! I clicked the link and found that all you had to do was sign up to get their newsletter and you’re in the draw. By the very fact that I was reading their newsletter I figured that I’m already signed up and entered.

Thinking that it might be a little confusing for some readers I decided to shoot the company a note to let them know.

Unfortunately it was one of those emails that warns you DO NOT REPLY to this email. OK – I won’t reply.

Why do businesses make it so hard to contact them? You would think that if you were running a business you’d make it as easy as possible to have customers get in touch with you yet so many businesses add DO NOT REPLY on their emails.

Even if the address they’re using for the mail out isn’t the right one to contact, it’d be very easy to set up a ‘reply to’ email address. The DO NOT REPLY message shouts, ‘We’re interested in your money, but you can keep your opinions and questions to yourself’.

Could this evil really be happening?

Can you imagine a government so evil that it oversees the execution of its citizens for the harvest and sale of body parts?

It sounds like a bad sci-fi movie but according to reliable investigations, this is what is happening right now in China.

My regular Wednesday morning guest on 98.5 Sonshine FM is Ross Clifford who is the Principal of Morling College in New South Wales and current President of the Baptist Union of Australia. Each week we chat about a range of issues relating to spirituality and belief.

Today we talked about the persecution of members of the religious movement, Falun Gong, and the accusation that members of the group are being used for a worldwide trade in body parts. There is also concern that members of the underground Christian church may be suffering from the same kind of human rights abuses.

Ross highlighted the work of Canadian MP, David Kilgour, who describes himself in his biography as a practising Christian. David is part of a wide ranging investigation into the human rights abuses in China. Together with David Matas he has published An Independent Investigation into Allegations of organ Harvesting of Falun gong practitioners in China.

So what are we to do with this information? How do we call for greater transparency in the actions of those in power in China? How do we send a message to the Chinese Government that this is unacceptable? These were a couple of the issues Ross and I discussed this morning.

If you’d like to hear our discussion you can listen via the media player below.

Thumbs Up! Edition Seven

Time for Edition Seven of Thumbs Up!

Apologies for not posting this earlier. I’ve been rather unwell for a few days and so a lot of things have taken a back seat. I’m on the improve and hoping to be back to 100% very soon.

We don’t have a lot of posts this time around but thanks to those who have taken part.

If this is the first you’ve heard of Thumbs Up! and you’re scratching your head wondering what it’s about you can read the details here.

Apple presents a post that is In Praise of Volunteers at The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree. Volunteers do an amazing job and we rely on them in so many areas of life. Maybe you’ve got a story about a volunteer that you could use for the next edition of Thumbs Up!

Sarah at This is what Sed said highlights someone who is well known in the local community but many wouldn’t know of his work behind the scenes. Check out her post simply titled, Wrirra. Do you know someone who is a great role model? Maybe you could highlight them for the next edition of Thumbs Up!

I don’t think I’ve left anyone out but if you did post a submission this week and you can’t see it here, please email me so that I can add your post. If you missed out on being a part of Thumbs Up! this week, get posting now and submit for next week.
