A Christmas Scorcher

It always seems strange for me to see images of Christmas that include snow and winter scenes. It really doesn’t match my experince of Christmas at all.

Here in Australia we’re in the middle of summer and that’s very evident here in Perth today with a forecast high of 39 degrees Celcius (102.2 degrees Fahrenheit). I cycled to work about 8:30 this morning and it was already very warm.

Tomorrow it’ll be warmer still with the mercury set to hit 40 degrees Celcius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

So what kind of weather are you having for Christmas?

  • it’s about 30 degrees here in Qld… overcast but no threat of rain. it’s a nice change from the total schorchers we’ve had in past years.

  • Hi Rodney –

Tomorrow is scheduled to be 57 degrees F and cloudy here in Virginia. The average high is 51 degrees and the record was 75. Pretty typical Christmas. I think it rained last year.

Where I grew up (Northern Wisconsin), they are digging out of a snowstorm. It’s supposed to be 26 degrees F and more snow.

I have mixed feelings about warmer weather – but I sure don’t miss the snow on any other day of the year!

    Merry Christmas!!!

  • About 22 here in Canberra, and overcast. Im sure I’d rather that, or maybe a few degrees more, than 39/40 you’re getting in Perth.

    Merry Christmas!!!

  • Grab a jacket weather in Sydney – seriously! I was thinking maybe we’d have a white Christmas (well, slight exaggeration)!

Merry Christmas Rodney. I hope you had a lovely day.

  • Merry Christmas rodney! It was apparently the coldest christmas day in Sydney for 13 years yesterday. I remember seeing it was only 22 when on my way to church at 7 in the morning, and i don’t think much changed throughout the day. So plans of drinks by the pool changed into board games and dvd’s.

  • a bit late on the draw, here. We had a Christmas season that ranged form colder than normal with lots of snow to rain and warm ( for us). When I first read your twitter I was thinking in Fahrenheit, and thought :”hey we are the same here as Australia” CORRECTION! We don’t even get that hot in full summertime.

Sounds like you are on the barbie instead of the shrimp 😉

Everyone here loves snow as long as they don’t have to go out and drive with the crazies. We don’t have enough for ppl to get used to. so there are fender benders everywhere everytime there is new snowfall.

  • Boxing Day was the hottest December day in Perth ever recorded. We got just over 44 degrees Celsius. It made it all the way up to 44.2 (111.56 degrees Fahrenheit)

  • I’m going for 50! If it gets to 50 then 45 will always seem mild compared. We’ll be able to say, ‘At least it’s not as hot as that day it got to 50.’ But I’m not praying for it or anything.

  • I was born in West Africa but emigrated to the states early, arriving in Ohio and staying there throughout my Growing Up ;^) Even for graduate school I was still in the midwest, so now that I find myself in sunny Florida…my mind still can’t grasp Christmas without the snow and cold. I don’t know if I ever will. :^)

    Hope your Christmas was blessed!

  • Here in Kenya we are had a warm Christmas, thought certainly not as warm as yours, but I grew up in USA where Christmas time is winter. I miss the cold for Christmas. Just does not feel like it otherwise. It is hard for me to imagine that when you think of Christmas you are thinking of summer. Strange to my mind.
