In conversation with Aled Jones

reasontobelieve.jpgAled Jones has been a household name for over 25 years. He joined the choir of Bangor Cathedral when he was just nine and was lead soloist within two years.

His remarkable voice led to a recording career and before his voice broke at the age of sixteen he had already sold more than six million albums, sung for the Pope performed a private recital for Prince Charles and Lady Diana, and sung at the wedding of Bob Geldof and Paula Yates.

After his voice broke he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

In 1995 he secured the leading role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and met his future wife, Claire Fossett, while touring in Blackpool. The couple married in 2001 and now live in London with their two young children, Emilia and Lucas.

These days he has a busy broadcasting career working in both radio and television.

He’s in Perth this Thursday for a concert at the Concert Hall and so I caught up with him  98.5 Sonshine FM.

Aled was a real delight to speak with and if you’d like to hear what we chatted about just click the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

  • A wonderful interview …thank you Rodney! So lovely to hear how Aled is feeling about his career and his Australian Tour! Having relished his concerts on his previous Australian tours in 2003 and 2006, I’m thrilled to bits that’s he back and I’m eagerly looking forward to his concert in Perth.

Aled is amazing….his warm and velvety voice is more an emotional experience than just listening to someone singing, but his talents aren’t limited to his mesmerizing voice: his stage presence and his charismatic and often cheeky personality is delicious.

  • Thanks Susie. It really was wonderful to chat to Aled. He was friendly and open and I certainly enjoyed our conversation.

I hope you enjoy the concert. I’m sure you will.

  • Thanks Rodney! His concert will be fabulous. Aled is really natural and relaxed and so easy to talk with, as you found…one of those really special people who is in the spotlight, yet has absolutely no pretentions about himself. A refreshing gift in one so talented.

  • I really enjoyed listening to you Rodney, interviewing Aled. He has been my favorite singer since I first heard him sing as a boy in l985. Here I am in the USA listening to you all the way in Australia. The technology we have today is almost unbelieveable, but great. Aled has such a remarkable voice both as a Treble and now as a high Baritone. He is so personable and genuine and you Aussies are so lucky to have him touring there. I heard him live in England 2 years ago and it was just fantastic. I am so thankful that they had a safe flight all the way down there, especially with the children along. My compliments to you for doing such a great job visiting with him. Have you heard him sing either as a Treble, or as an adult? You really should get one of his discs if you are unable to be at a concert while he is there. Thanks again, Patsy

  • Thanks for your comments, Patsy.

Unfortunately I won’t get to see Aled in concert this time around.

My wife and I would love to go but things are a little busy at the moment and we can’t get away for the evening.

  • Thank you for another excellent interview.

I went to the Perth concert and loved it – beautiful music and some very amusing entertainment from Aled. It’s a shame you couldn’t go, especially after talking to him.

He promised to include Perth on every future tour and I’ll certainly be there next time.

  • Eryl, glad to hear you enjoyed the concert so much.

I’m pleased to hear that he intends coming back here. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to see him in concert next time around.
