Prayer is when we talk to God, but meditation is creating an environment for God to speak to us. Medititation is a tool for quieting our minds and becoming still. Christian meditation adds an additional bonus of building greater intimacy with God. I've never really heard of meditation seeming bad within Christianity. I've always seen or heard individuals, even of that religious persuasion, advocating meditation for the reasons you described.
