The demise of the Polly Waffle

PollyWaffle.jpgSurely this can’t be true. What a tragedy. After 62 delicious years the Polly Waffle will cease to exist. The announcement was made yesterday that the iconic Australian chocolate bar is going the way of the dodo due to poor sales.

For those outside Australia who have never tasted the delights of a Polly Waffle, it’s an Australian chocolate bar that is manufactured in Sydney, Australia by Nestlé. It consists of a waffle wafer tube filled with marshmallow and coated in chocolate.

Hoadley’s Chocolates made the first Polly Waffle bar in Melbourne with a number of company buy outs eventually bringing the Polly Waffle to Nestlé.

“It’s costing more to produce than what we get back in sales,” Nestlé’s Fran Hernon said, adding that it had been a difficult decision.

“Everybody says they love the Polly Waffle but the truth is no one buys it today. The time for it has been and gone.” – News.com.au

We didn’t have a lot of chocolate bars when we were growing up but it was always a real treat when dad or mum brought home a Polly Waffle. There was always the big decision of whether to bite straight in or to try to prize the wafer tube apart to eat the marshmallow first. Whichever way you did it, they were always delicious.

I think I’ll have to buy a crate or two and slowly work my way through them for old time’s sake. It’ll be sad to see the old Polly Waffle go.

Have you ever had a Polly Waffle? When was the last time you had one? Will you be sad to see the Polly Waffle go?

  • The new recipe was terrible. Good luck finding original recipe to stockpile! I found a box of original recipe in IGA some months back when the recipe was changed. I now have approx 60 original recipe Pollywaffles in cold storage. (My wife thinks I’m crazy!) They freeze quite well by the way. Just make sure you defrost them nice and slow in the fridge. First Triple Treat ice cream, now Pollywaffle, and next…..Reschs beer?

  • Like so many I also had so forgotten about pollywaffles; as a kid and under the Hoadley’s brand I have nothing but fond memories. But in recent years not once have I seen any marketing, try and find any and they will be out of reach or on the bottom shelf. I did stumble accross some in a little newsagent yesterday and bought the lot. It was the first time my 8 year old had ever had one, now he too is devestated that they are no longer.
There is so much choice on the market so of course sales will be down when only baby boomer’s and a few Gen X are even aware of the product. It also has a very dated wrapper, and for the slightly more discerning taste, the quality of the chocolate could be improved, but I still love them. Unfortunately I could not help myself and I’ve eaten the lot – YUM! Nestle – Shame on you

    • Thanks for dropping in Sarah.

I haven’t had time to go on a Polly Waffle hunt yet but I’m hoping to make time this weekend. I hope there are some left. 🙂

I also need to introduce my children to the wonders of Polly Waffles before the opportunity is gone forever.

  • Where is the Polly Waffle…GONE.I am in the USA and have had this delightful treat sent to me for years as I grew up with it.My son (American Born) grew up with this treat and HIS children have learned to love them as well. Now what are we to do without this lollie treat from home….Along with everything else……….certainly I don’t believe from demand has it disappeared……just trying to save cost !!Shame on you…….I will miss this crunchy, marshmallow delight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • We always used to say as kids that we needed to go and back out a Polly Waffle. We thought it was a huge Joke. Maybe Nestles should have played on the old joke by doing the floating Polly waffle in the pool thing in its Adds.

  • Over 60’s website is asking people if they like Polly Waffles. They do and want them back. Most chocolate bars are ridiculously sweet. Polly Waffle was fabulous. I live in Sydney
