Facebook Fuels Divorce

Facebook.jpgCould our online lives be destroying our real world lives?

The Telegraph has published an article that claims Facebook is being cited in a growing number of divorce petitions.

Apparently many people are using Facebook and other social networking sites to look up old flames or to find new ones. Many don’t see the harm in flirting with online contacts.

Divorce lawyers claim the explosion in the popularity of websites such as Facebook and Bebo is tempting to people to cheat on their partners.

Suspicious spouses have also used the websites to find evidence of flirting and even affairs which have led to divorce.

One law firm, which specialises in divorce, claimed almost one in five petitions they processed cited Facebook.

So is Facebook to blame?

As we all come to terms with new technology we need to be constantly examining the boundaries that are required to keep our relationships safe, but I can’t help wondering if we also need to re-visit and reinforce some old boundaries.

My marriage vows included a promise to ‘forsake all others’ and that goes for every part of life. I started this post asking if our online lives could be destroying our real world lives but that’s really a deceptive question. It’s a question which presupposes that those ‘two lives’ are somehow separate. They’re not. The real world real you is really the person punching the keys on the keyboard and it’s really you who is flirting with another real person via a real keyboard and computer somewhere else in the world. It may be on the other side of the planet or next door, but real people are involved.

I talk about my family a fair bit on both Facebook and my blog. I’m not leaving anything open for interpretation. I love my wife and whether I’m at home, at work, out with friends or online, people should be in no doubt that I will continue to forsake all others.

I don’t buy the argument that flirting is just light hearted fun. Whether it’s online or offline, if you’re married, flirting should be reserved for your spouse.

So is Facebook fueling divorce? I don’t think so. I think it simply provides another opportunity for people to act out the things that are already in their hearts.

R.I.P. the Real Rain Man

KimPeek.jpgIn the 1988 movie Rain Man Dustin Hoffman played a mega-savant. His character was based on Kim Peek, a man with a number of severe mental handicaps but also with some remarkable skills and abilities that still defy explanation.

Kim Peek passed away a couple of days ago of a massive heart in Salt Lake City aged 58.

Although Kim had difficulty with simple things like turning on lights or dressing himself, his memory was legendary, inspiring Barry Morrow to write the movie Rain Man and earning him four Academy Awards.

According to Peek’s father, Fran, Peek was able to memorize things from the age of 16-20 months. He read books, memorized them, and then placed them upside down on the shelf to show that he had finished reading them, a practice he maintained.

He read a book in about an hour, and remembered almost everything he had read, memorizing vast amounts of information in subjects ranging from history and literature, geography, and numbers to sports, music, and dates.

His reading technique consisted of reading the left page with his left eye and the right page with his right eye and in this way he could read two pages at time with a rate of about 8-10 seconds per page.

He could recall the content of some 12,000 books from memory. – Wikipedia

The movie Rain Man made Peek so famous he traveled the world displaying his talents. It’s estimated that he has spoken to over 64 million people and traveled nearly 3 million air miles. There have been 2,800 newspaper and magazine articles and 22 documentaries about Peek and his extraordinary capabilities. His memory got even better as he got older.

He was an amazing person and it’s so sad to say goodbye to the real Rain Man.

Bing, Bowie and the Drummer Boy

I know that it dates me but I’m a fan of both Bing and Bowie. This remains a favourite Christmas song for me. I hope you enjoy it too.

Have some Compassion this Christmas

CompassionGifts.jpg

I posted details about Compassion Australia’s Gifts of Compassion back in September but I figure it’s time for a reminder. The gifts they’re selling help people who are battling desperate poverty.

You can buy everything from mosquito nets to a carpentry workshop with lots more in between including cows, sewing machines and a kit to help new mums.

Why not let your friends and family know that you’d like them to choose something from Gifts of Compassion for your Christmas gift this year? Go on … you’ve thought about it before but unless you let your loved ones know now it’ll never happen.

Maybe you’ve done most of your Christmas shopping already and you’re looking for stocking stuffers. What are stocking stuffers? They’re the small items that no one really needs yet we buy them anyway because all the Christmas advertising tells us we need to do so. How about stuffing some stockings with a card that tells a person you love that someone in a developing country will have a real chance at making a go of life in 2010 because you gave something in their honour to someone who has so very little?

How very strange

Just in case you dropped in here over the past 48 hours and noticed some strange happenings I thought I’d let you know what was going on.

For short periods of time over the last couple of days you may have seen nothing here or perhaps some strange formatting. You may even have wondered who stole all my posts.

The simple explanation is that I changed web and domain hosts and there was a little work that needed to be done to move everything to where it needed to be.

Everything should now be as it needs to be. If, however, you do notice anything that’s out of place, please let me know.
