May, 2011:

Where’s Nanna?

The Brow Horn Orchestra is described as an eight piece Multi-Award Winning afro-electro, hip-hop, dub, ska and pop juggernaut. The problem is, they’ve lost nanna.

They recently performed at a music festival in Mandurah, just south of Perth, and while they were on stage a ‘mature aged fan’ was videoed dancing. Now they want to find out who she is so that they can include her in their next music video. They’ve nicknamed her the dancing nanna.

It’s understood that she’s probably in her 80s and may have been in Western Australia on holiday from Tasmania. The band would be happy to fly her back to Perth so that she can be in the video clip but they have to track her down first.

Fake Fifties

I was reading this morning that shops in the Perth suburbs of Joondalup, Gwelup and Carlisle have all been caught out by people passing off fake fifty dollar notes. It would be such a terrible feeling to discover that something you considered valuable is of no value whatsoever.

Federal police have arrested a 30 year old man in relation to the counterfeits but there’s likely to be more out there. They say that the fake notes feel a lot more papery and they lack the watermark in the transparent window of the note.

I’m glad that we’re being told what to look out for but it’s been so long since I’ve handled a real fifty dollar note, I don’t know if I’d be able to pick a fake.

National Day of Thanksgiving 2011

Have you ever noticed how good it feels when someone gives a simple but heartfelt thank you? A simple acknowledgement can lift our spirits and give us a greater reason to keep going and to increase our efforts.

We know what a difference it can make to our attitude and how it can really lift us, which makes me wonder why we don’t make more of an effort to thank others.

Who is there in your life who deserves to be thanked?

This Saturday, the 28th of May, is the National Day of Thanksgiving in Australia. The day was first celebrated on the 17th of June in 2003 and is endorsed by the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and the Governor General.

It’s simply a day to say thank you. The official website emphasises that this isn’t just another event, but an opportunity to thank those who help make up our community.

The National Day of Thanksgiving is a unique opportunity for Australians to celebrate and give thanks for our God given heritage as a nation and to demonstrate the God given values of honour, respect, thankfulness and gratitude towards our fellow man that have made us the great nation we are.

It is a day for us to pause as a nation and say thank you to God and to each other for those many things we often take for granted but which really make our lives worth living. Let us use this day to be a blessing to those who have been a blessing to us during the past year.

During my morning radio program on 98.5 Sonshine FM today I spoke to the Coordinator of the National Day of Thanksgiving, Brian Pickering. You can listen to our conversation by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Who will you be thanking? Maybe you can give the local police a call to thank them for the tough work they do within our community. What about hospital workers? Do you know someone who provides a service the community that deserves a pat on the back?

How about someone at work who makes your day easier but often misses out on any recognition?

Is there someone in your family that deserves some thanks for the unseen things they do that help things run smoothly at your place?

When was the last time you said thanks to God for the gift of life itself?

Even though this is an Australian initiative, you don’t have to be living down under to take a few moments to reflect on those people who deserve to hear you say thank you.

Each year, as well as giving opportunity for us to thank the many people who make our lives and society better, we’re asked to focus on a specific sector of the community.

Those we can honour and thank as part of our National Thanksgiving Day celebrations are:

People involved in Entertainment, Music and Art.

Those who work in Radio, Television, Film and Print Media.

People employed in the area of Information Technology.

We also encourage you to acknowledge and thank people who work for Charitable Organisations, particularly those involved with the homeless, disadvantaged and poor.

This year we particularly need to thank those many people involved in Flood & Cyclone Relief and Recovery.

The website has a number of resources including e-cards to send to those people you want to thank.

Who will you be thanking this Saturday? Make your plans today.

Logitech UE 200 Earphones

Public Transport Zombies. I’m sure you’ve seen them. I know that I saw plenty of them during the six weeks I was on jury duty recently. I would get on the bus or train and see a sea of people connected to phones or personal music devices. I’m sure that something was being pumped through their earphones but all I could see was blank faces. Thankfully I’ve discovered how to change all that.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are still using the earphones that came with their music players. That’s why they can listen to music without registering anything resembling emotion. You can be hearing the greatest music ever produced but without an effective way to get that music to your ears, you’re likely to be missing the nuances that the musicians worked so hard to record.

Nothing beats a live performance, but if you’re serious about music, you’ll want earphones that get you closer to what was originally intended in the recording process. Ultimate Ears 200 Noise-Isolating Earphones are a great place to start. I reckon that if I stood at the local train station handing out some UE 200s I’d cure the public transport zombies instantly.

A pair of Ultimate Ears earphones will change the way you listen to music.

Ultimate Ears 200 Noise-Isolating Earphones (UE 200) block out all the background noise you don’t want to deliver pure music to your ears. I was recently sent a pair of UE 200s as a Logitech Product Tester. They’ve become an instant favourite.

The cute, hard plastic case they arrived in ensured that they got to me in excellent condition. The first thing I noticed about the UE 200s was the simple, rounded shape. I sometimes take a while to feel comfortable with some earphones but the design on the UE 200s made them fit comfortably from the first time I used them. The great thing is, if you don’t feel immedately comfortable with UE 200s, you can try any of the five soft ear cushions included.

A lot of sound for a little price.

Before I used the earphones I had a quick look online to see what they’re worth. I spotted them at a couple of places for under $40. At that price I expected them to be good, but nothing earth shattering. I must say that I was very surprised at the quality of audio they delivered. Having worked in radio for over 23 years I’ve spent more time than most piping music directly to my ears through various kinds of headphones. I know what good quality audio is all about and these deliver remarkably well for the price.

To say that my musical tastes are eclectic would be an understatement. If I put my iPod on shuffle I’m likely to hear anything from Alicia Keys to Slade, Train, David Bowie, Killing Heidi, Bing Crosby, Amy Winehouse, Regina Spektor, Duffy and I’m a huge Diana Krall fan. I’ll hear screaming guitars, thrashing drums, breathy jazz vocals, subtle orchestral movements, soft acoustic guitars and so much more. I need earphones that can handle it all. The UE 200s do the job well.

I’ve used the UE 200s everywhere from on public transport to while cycling. As far as the cycling goes, I’m glad they have a sweat-resistant design. I’m tired of earphones with cables that become hard and brittle after being exposed to a little effort on the bike.

Who did that?

A few days ago I was wearing the UE 200s and heard someone clap. I jerked my head around to see who it was. It was only then that I registered that it was part of the song I was listening to at the time. That tells me two things. Firstly, they deliver sound so true to life that I really believed that someone near me had just clapped. Secondly, I was noticing elements of the recorded music that I hadn’t noticed before with inferior earphones.

My only complaint.

I don’t know how many people insist on ensuring they have the correct earphone in the correct ear to get the intended left/right stereo split, but I certainly do. That’s probably my only complaint with the UE 200s. Maybe it’s just my failing eyesight but I found the tiny ‘L’ and ‘R’ on the earphones a bit too small to see at a glance. A bit of permanent marker on the left bud has now solved that issue for me.

Do your ears a favour.

With more and more people spending more and more time plugged in to their favourite music it just makes good sense to be able to experience that music as it was intended. Logitech UE 200s deliver better audio quality than many of the earphones that come with portable music players. Do your ears a favour and grab some for a better music experience.

Soul Surfer

I really wasn’t sure what to expect of the movie Soul Surfer, the true life story of Bethany Hamilton, but last night we headed to a preview screening. What a wonderful movie.

So often in life we meet people who allow circumstances to drag them down and give them reason to give up. The story of Bethany Hamilton should inspire people to overcome whatever life throws their way.

Through determination and a strong Christian faith, Bethany overcame the loss of her arm to get back in the water and continue surfing at the highest level. I’m not a surfer but I still loved this movie.

Bethany has become a source of inspiration to millions through her story of determination, faith and hope. Born into a family of surfers on February 8, 1990, Bethany jumped on the board at a young age. Bethany entered her first surf competition—winning both the short and long board divisions at age eight. On Halloween morning 2003, Bethany was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark, which bit off her left arm and seemed to end her career as a rising surf star. After losing more than 60% of her blood and undergoing several surgeries, Bethany began her recovery with an unbelievably positive attitude.

Miraculously, just one month after the attack, Bethany returned to the water. Two months later, Bethany placed fifth in the Open Women’s division surf competition and just over a year after the attack she won her first National Title. In 2007, Bethany realized her dream and turned pro. Bethany has since participated in numerous Association of Surfing Professionals and World Tour Events with her major highlight being a second place finish in the ASP 2009 World Junior Championships. “It has been an incredible journey for me and now, I’m just so excited to share it!” says Bethany.

The cast includes AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and Carrie Underwood.

If you’re looking for inspiration, don’t miss Soul Surfer.
