Do you need a pig?

You might not have a lot of use for a pig but for a rural family in a developing country the simple gift of a pig could be just what they need to break free from poverty.

So where do you buy a pig and how do you get it to someone who needs it? Compassion Australia’s Gifts of Compassion is open and ready for business. Their gifts help people who are battling desperate poverty. They can take your money and turn it into a very real solution to poverty.

You can buy everything from mosquito nets to a mechanic workshop with lots more in between including chickens, cows, sewing machines and a kit to help new mums.

I know that it’s wonderful to receive gifts at Christmas but most of us already have more than enough ‘stuff’, so why not do something different this year and let your friends and family know that you’d like them to choose something from Gifts of Compassion for your Christmas gift this year?

Go on … you’ve thought about it before but unless you let your loved ones know now it’ll never happen.

Is This Your Camera?

A guy called Adam recently found a camera ….. under water.

The camera is a Panasonic Lumix LT10 and when he check the camera he found that it was not only still working, it had a number of photos on it. Now Panasonic is trying to get the word out to find the owner.

It’s a great advertisement for Panasonic and hopefully someone will soon be reunited with their camera and family memories.

Logitech UE 200 Earphones

Public Transport Zombies. I’m sure you’ve seen them. I know that I saw plenty of them during the six weeks I was on jury duty recently. I would get on the bus or train and see a sea of people connected to phones or personal music devices. I’m sure that something was being pumped through their earphones but all I could see was blank faces. Thankfully I’ve discovered how to change all that.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are still using the earphones that came with their music players. That’s why they can listen to music without registering anything resembling emotion. You can be hearing the greatest music ever produced but without an effective way to get that music to your ears, you’re likely to be missing the nuances that the musicians worked so hard to record.

Nothing beats a live performance, but if you’re serious about music, you’ll want earphones that get you closer to what was originally intended in the recording process. Ultimate Ears 200 Noise-Isolating Earphones are a great place to start. I reckon that if I stood at the local train station handing out some UE 200s I’d cure the public transport zombies instantly.

A pair of Ultimate Ears earphones will change the way you listen to music.

Ultimate Ears 200 Noise-Isolating Earphones (UE 200) block out all the background noise you don’t want to deliver pure music to your ears. I was recently sent a pair of UE 200s as a Logitech Product Tester. They’ve become an instant favourite.

The cute, hard plastic case they arrived in ensured that they got to me in excellent condition. The first thing I noticed about the UE 200s was the simple, rounded shape. I sometimes take a while to feel comfortable with some earphones but the design on the UE 200s made them fit comfortably from the first time I used them. The great thing is, if you don’t feel immedately comfortable with UE 200s, you can try any of the five soft ear cushions included.

A lot of sound for a little price.

Before I used the earphones I had a quick look online to see what they’re worth. I spotted them at a couple of places for under $40. At that price I expected them to be good, but nothing earth shattering. I must say that I was very surprised at the quality of audio they delivered. Having worked in radio for over 23 years I’ve spent more time than most piping music directly to my ears through various kinds of headphones. I know what good quality audio is all about and these deliver remarkably well for the price.

To say that my musical tastes are eclectic would be an understatement. If I put my iPod on shuffle I’m likely to hear anything from Alicia Keys to Slade, Train, David Bowie, Killing Heidi, Bing Crosby, Amy Winehouse, Regina Spektor, Duffy and I’m a huge Diana Krall fan. I’ll hear screaming guitars, thrashing drums, breathy jazz vocals, subtle orchestral movements, soft acoustic guitars and so much more. I need earphones that can handle it all. The UE 200s do the job well.

I’ve used the UE 200s everywhere from on public transport to while cycling. As far as the cycling goes, I’m glad they have a sweat-resistant design. I’m tired of earphones with cables that become hard and brittle after being exposed to a little effort on the bike.

Who did that?

A few days ago I was wearing the UE 200s and heard someone clap. I jerked my head around to see who it was. It was only then that I registered that it was part of the song I was listening to at the time. That tells me two things. Firstly, they deliver sound so true to life that I really believed that someone near me had just clapped. Secondly, I was noticing elements of the recorded music that I hadn’t noticed before with inferior earphones.

My only complaint.

I don’t know how many people insist on ensuring they have the correct earphone in the correct ear to get the intended left/right stereo split, but I certainly do. That’s probably my only complaint with the UE 200s. Maybe it’s just my failing eyesight but I found the tiny ‘L’ and ‘R’ on the earphones a bit too small to see at a glance. A bit of permanent marker on the left bud has now solved that issue for me.

Do your ears a favour.

With more and more people spending more and more time plugged in to their favourite music it just makes good sense to be able to experience that music as it was intended. Logitech UE 200s deliver better audio quality than many of the earphones that come with portable music players. Do your ears a favour and grab some for a better music experience.

Happy Ears

My ears are happy … very happy.

A couple of weeks back I won a set of t-JAYS Two earphones through a Twitter competition. I waited patiently for them to arrive and was very pleased that they didn’t take too long to find their way to my home.

It says a lot about a company when they even care about the packaging of their products. When you pick up a set of t-JAYS the first thing you’re likely to notice is the hard plastic case that houses them. The design team has been busy. Slip the package open and you’ll find everything laid out perfectly, from the earphones themselves to the extra silicone covers, the little black operating manual and the other adapters, including an airplane plug, each piece has its place. Impressive.

Of course all that comes to nothing if they don’t produce a reasonable sound. Thankfully they more than do the job.

Having worked in radio for over 23 years I’ve spent more time than most piping music directly to my ears through various kinds of headphones. I know what good quality audio is all about.

The t-JAYS somehow manage to reproduce all these sounds faithfully. Don’t be surprised if they allow you to hear musical nuances that you’ve never noticed in your favourite tracks before.

On the down side, they took me a little while to get over that uncomfortable new earphone feeling but I seem to get that with all new earphones. It didn’t take too long for them to feel comfortable. You might also take a short time to get used to having earphones that are designed to be firmly inserted into your ear canal. It’s worth it.

The sound isolation that the t-JAYS provide let me slip away into my own world as I travel on a packed bus or train. While the noise level around me continues to swell, I’m hearing every vocal and every instrument of my chosen music.

I’ll admit that I’ve used better headphones before but when it comes to earphones or earbuds, nothing I’ve tried before comes close.

I now have truly happy ears.

Facebook Makes Changes to ‘Pages’

Great to see that Facebook has made some changes to their ‘pages’.

They regularly upgrade the standard profiles, causing cheering from some and jeering from others, but they’ve now added some extra functions to what they call ‘fan pages’. (I still have issues about calling them fan pages but more of that in a moment.)

What have they added?

Notifications when other Facebook users interact with your page or posts.
A place to showcase photos along the top of your page.
A news feed for your page.
The ability to Like and post on other pages as your page.

Great news for those of us who have such pages as it allows us to interact more naturally with those who’ve ‘liked’ our pages.

I still feel a little odd having something titled as a ‘fan page’. When you set up your own Facebook ‘fan page’ it does seem somewhat cheesey and self serving. I get that, but that’s not what it’s about. I’m not looking for fans. I’m simply wanting to stay connected with a wider group of friends.

So why would an ordinary bloke ask people to click the link that says they ‘like’ him? Overinflated ego? Umm … no. A deep cry for acceptance? No again.

The truth is that I jumped on board with Facebook some time ago and have built up quite a number of Facebook friends. Some are family, some are close friends, some acquaintances, some are old school friends, while others are those I’ve ‘met’ online.

I’ve been torn between wanting to accept every friend request I receive and keeping Facebook for those I know personally. Having a wider group of friends means I sometimes can’t share as much as I like, while keeping a very closed Facebook page means I can’t share stuff with as many people as I’d like.

While it’s not a perfect solution I decided to set up a new Facebook page that’s completely open to everyone. You don’t even have to make a friendship request, just click the button and add yourself as a friend.

If you’re already a Facebook friend and you feel you’d fit better with the new page, feel free to ‘unfriend’ me and join the new page. You’re also welcome to stay connected through both pages.

I post a lot of the same content on both pages but the ability to share things a little differently allows me to protect my privacy and especially my family’s privacy a little better.

I hope to see you at my new Facebook page soon.
