David Campbell talks about Let’s Go

There are four CDs that have taken an absolute hammering in our home over recent years. The Swings Sessions, The Swing Sessions 2, Good Lovin’, and On Broadway.

All these albums come from one artist – David Campbell.

Now there’s a new album to add to the list. David has gone back to the eighties to bring us a dozen stunning songs under the banner of Let’s Go.

Personally for David, LET’S GO represents the missing link in the songs that helped shape him into the singer he is today.

“I was schooled in this music,” says David. “This was the time where I was hitting puberty, taping songs off Countdown onto my VHS tape and watching them over and over. For me, it’s primal party music, but with style.”

The Style Council’s “Shout To The Top”, John Waites’ “Missing You”, Yazoo’s “Only You”, Spandau Ballet’s “True” – these are the songs that struck an emotional chord with the artist as a young man and provided a counter-balance to the old school swing and Broadway influences David was soaking up from his grandmother’s record collection. As Gran taught David the classics, his mum and aunt fed him a healthy dose of Style Council and Dexy’s Midnight Runners [“Come On Eileen”].

These are the songs that make up the soundtrack to David’s adolescence. “‘A lot of these songs have different memories for me,” he says. “‘Shout To The Top’ I went to my aunty’s engagement party, they put it on the stereo and I was like, ‘Wow, what the hell is that?’ I did my first school dance to ‘True’, for goodness sake,” he laughs.

He joined me on the line during today’s Morning Cafe on 98.5 Sonshine FM. Just click the play button on the audio player below to hear today’s interview.

Broadway comes to Perth

David Campbell’s On Broadway tour rolled into Perth last night to prove once again that when it comes to all round performers, there are very few in the league of David Campbell.

In an age where it seems that almost every second song on the radio is using electronics to create vocals that no longer sound remotely human, it’s refreshing to experience a performance that showcases the pure power and beauty of the human voice. You don’t need a ‘vocoder’ to play photoshop with a voice as good as Campbell’s. His performance was remarkable, combining incredible energy, timing, power and flawless delivery of each and every note. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a concert before where I’ve wanted to leap out of my seat to give a standing ovation after each and every song.

The orchestra didn’t miss a beat as it provided the perfect landscape for every song, from the subtle beauty of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables to the big band sound of the Guys and Dolls classic, Luck Be a Lady. The show started with a stunning version of Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’ and then carried us through a journey of Broadway classics and even a couple of songs destined for greatness on one of the world’s most famous streets.

If the superb musical feast wasn’t enough, Campbell kept the audience in the palm of his hand as he recounted stories surrounding the recording of the album through to his association with some of the music world’s greatest and most famous players. His humour between songs and his ability to become the character behind each number as soon as the orchestra played the opening notes had the audience on an amazing rollercoaster of emotion throughout.

While the experience of hearing him live can’t be truly captured on CD, I’d encourage you to grab a copy of On Broadway to experience some of the magic that David Campbell brings to some of Broadway’s most loved songs.

David Campbell is one of Australia’s most popular entertainers. A multi-platinum selling recording artist, Campbell has featured on TV, starred in theatre and cabaret, recorded three Top Ten albums, and sold out concert tours from coast to coast. He has a unique legacy as not just one of Australia’s leading musical theatre stars, but also one of the few local performers to have achieved similar success in New York.

Born and raised in Adelaide, David was drawn to the performing arts – initially as an actor. He was performing at the STC and Sydney Opera House by the age of 22, and in 1997 starred in a major revival of Les Miserables in Sydney. Shortly after this, Campbell moved to New York, where his downtown cabaret show attracted major crowds. Due to what Time Out New York described as “the biggest buzz since Barbra Streisand”, Campbell moved his show to the iconic cabaret room Rainbow & Stars, becoming the youngest performer ever to headline the venue.

Campbell’s latest album ‘On Broadway’ sees him interpreting a host of beloved musical theatre songs on record for the first time. The album combines songs from hit shows in which he has starred (Les Miserables, Company, Guys & Dolls, Carousel) with songs from other hit musicals (Oklahoma!, Hello, Dolly!, Chicago, On The Town), and even a world premiere recording from a forthcoming show by Hairspray writers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman – David Campbell bio.

If the concert wasn’t thrilling enough, our family spent a few moments with David Campbell after the concert as he gave generously of his time and attention to dozens of fans in the foyer of the Perth Concert Hall. He immediately recognised Pauline from Facebook and was thrilled to hear that the information Emily received from him helped James to an A for his school project on his favourite singer.

I’ve interviewed him a couple of times via phone in the past so it was wonderful to finally meet David face to face.

He was a family favourite even before last night but I get the feeling there’ll be a lot more of Mr Campbell’s music ringing through our home in the coming months.

Talking to Adam Harvey

Adam Harvey - Both Sides NowGeelong born country music singer Adam Harvey has worked as a truckie and a goldminer. Since those days he’s certainly struck gold with a swag of golden guitar awards.

His amazing voice was on display for a wider audience when he took part in Channel 7’s It Takes Two in 2008.

Adam has achieved one of country music’s ultimate dreams by performing at the Grand Ole Opry, yet he’s still a very down to earth person. He even dropped in to his local primary school a couple of months back to sing Christmas carols.

He’s travelled west this week to take part in tomorrow’s Hope from Ashes Toodyay Benefit Concert and he joined me in the studio this morning as part of my programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM. It was a true delight to chat with Adam and thankfully he brought his guitar to perform standout acoustic versions of Stuck in the Middle and King of the Road.

You can listen to the interview by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

In October last year Adam released an album of duets titled Both Sides Now. It features artists such as Troy Cassar-Daley, Wendy Matthews, Kasey Chambers, Shannon Noll, David Campbell, Leo Sayer, Renee Geyer, Tommy Emmanuel and Guy Sebastian.

David Campbell

DavidCampbell.jpgHe’s been described by music critics as the best young crooner on Earth. His album The Swing Sessions was his best selling album ever and now The Swing Sessions 2 is following suit with amazing sales taking the album to double platinum. It seems that audiences can’t get enough of David Campbell.

Last night he put in a very energetic performance with Chloe Maxwell on Channel 7’s It Takes Two but this morning he joined me on the Morning Programme at 98.5 Sonshine FM.

David Campbell is a guy who always looks like he’s enjoying his work and it’s always great to catch up with him.

He’ll be performing a couple of concerts in Perth at the Regal Theatre on the 12th and 13th of March as part of his Australian tour. I’m sure that he’ll be playing to packed houses of adoring fans.

Listen to what David has to say about his albums, his time on It Takes Two and his upcoming tour by clicking play on the audio player at the bottom of this post.
