Are you a ‘normal’ sleeper?

sleep

I’ve often wished that I could put my head on my pillow at the end of a long day and then wake up many hours later feeling rested and ready to take on the world again. Unfortunately that never seems to be the case.

I’m aware that I wake up a few times during the night and I have to admit to being a little concerned that I’m missing much needed sleep.

The Good News

Today I discovered just how normal that sleep pattern is for most people. Thanks to an article titled ‘Normal sleep’ a mystery to some, I’ve found that waking through the night is pretty much what’s meant to happen. I’m normal. Well at least my sleep is somewhat normal.

Lead researcher Professor Dorothy Bruck says the study shows the disconnect between the science of sleep and community expectations.

This lack of understanding about normal sleep patterns can also create a Catch 22 situation, she says, where people become anxious because they wake up and then can’t get back to sleep.

“In fact, normal sleep is a roller coaster cycle of deep sleep, light sleep and brief awakenings repeated several times in the night,” says Bruck.

She says better education and understanding of this cycle could literally help Australians rest easier.

How well do you sleep? Are you aware of waking and falling back to sleep throughout the night?

Is there anything you do to get a better night’s sleep?

Do you need more sleep?

sleep

How are you feeling today? A little weary? Are you getting enough sleep?

While some of us never seem to be able to get enough sleep, there are some people, like tech entrepreneur Ruslan Kogan who works 20 hours a day, firing off emails to staff at all hours. Australia’s Ex-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd often ran on just three hours sleep, particularly at the height of the global financial crisis.

With the ever increasing pressures of life many of us wish that we could spend less time sleeping and more time getting things done. But is that healthy?

I spoke to Professor Shantha Rajaratnam, President, Australasian Sleep Association on radio this morning.

There are a small number of Australians, who through a combination of lifestyle and biological factors, can function (if not at their peak) on an extremely small amount of sleep.

“There’s a range of what we call habitual sleep durations in the population,” says Professor Shantha Rajaratnam, the president of the Australasian Sleep Association. While some people may cope a little better when they’re sleep deprived, it’s often more driven by lifestyle and environmental factors, Prof Rajaratnam says. – News.com.au

An Embarassing Awakening

sleep

What are you like at sleeping on planes? A lot of the travelling I did on the way to and from Bangladesh and India last month was in the middle of the night, so I kept dozing off and waking up. I couldn’t get any decent sleep but I had a series of naps, only waking up to try to move my aching neck.

Seems the co-pilot on a low cost Dutch airline is better at sleeping on aircraft than I am. He was on a flight to Crete in Greece in September last year when the pilot left the cockpit to go to the toilet.

When the pilot returned he couldn’t get back into the cockpit because the co-pilot had nodded off. I’m not sure that it’d be particularly comforting for passengers to see their pilot locked out of the cockpit. Thankfully he managed to get back in where he found the co-pilot asleep.

Where’s the most embarrassing place you’ve fallen asleep?

I’ve felt pretty sleepy at times but managed to avoid falling asleep at the wrong time. Mind you, that can be a real battle.

Have you fallen asleep on public transport and missed your stop? Have you nodded off at work or in a meeting? Did you manage to hide it or did you get sprung?

How Could I Get It So Wrong?

No one likes to think of themselves as a failure but sometimes we need to admit that there are some things we’re just never going to master.

I am not the person to speak to if you need help solving difficult mathematical problems. Don’t come and see me if you need someone who’s great with DIY projects. While I love cycling, you’ll never see me on top of the winners podium.

I can live with not being able to master all these things. There are plenty of things I’m good at, like … well … just take my word for it.

What does concern me is something that I got so horribly wrong last night.

Maybe a bit of background information would help. For several months I’ve suffered from back soreness. It’s ranged from, “Ooh, that’s uncomfortable” through to, “Aaaaaaaaaaaargh!!”. Recently, if I’ve dropped something on the floor I just figure that that’ll be a great new permanent home for whatever it is because there’s no way I can even consider bending low enough to pick it up.

Being a man, I put off treatment for way too long. I don’t want to say how long but if it keeps up too much longer my back pain will be able to celebrate its own anniversary. Thankfully the treatment I’m now receiving is slowly but surely making a big difference … but there are still good and bad days.

Yesterday was a good day but today I woke up feeling quite sore. This led me to think to myself, “I must have slept wrong.” How much of a failure are you when you get sleeping wrong? It’s a simple process. You lie down, pull up the covers, shut your eyes and all things going well, you wake up some hours later feeling rested. I got it completely wrong last night.

It’s not like I haven’t had practice. I’ve been working on this sleeping thing for well over 48 years. They say practice makes perfect but not in this case. All that practice and I still sleep wrong.

I’m not one to be deterred. Tonight will be my night. I will sleep well. I will wake rested and then celebrate ….. but not too vigorously. I’ve got a bad back, you know.

Sweet Dreams

Just a few days ago I asked, can you help? Seems the answer was yes.

Thanks to some generous bloggers and blog readers, Mandi Kaye will sleep well tonight. You can check out her new bed in her post Good Slumber is Finally Here.

For those who gave – thanks.
