The Answer is God

James is usually in Junior Church during the sermon at church but with school holidays – Junior Church takes a break.

We were in the back row and James was lying on the floor in front of us colouring a picture. Our pastor was in full flight drawing a distinction between being a Christian due to culture or committment. He was challenging us all to examine our motivation for following Christ.

“Who are you living for? Who are you living for?” came the question. From beneath the back row came the confident voice of a 5 year old. “God.” He didn’t even look up from his colouring. It was a very natural question for him and an even more natural answer.

Needless to say we had a number of faces turning our way with big smiles.

James can be naughty and at times quite a handful but I’m constantly amazed at his spirituality. He often tells me that God is his best friend. His prayers are amazing. There’s a girl we know who was involved in a nasty car accident over a year ago. James still remembers to pray for her several times a day without any prompting. There are many other things that he prays about daily. Our dinner can go quite cold while we wait for him to finish saying grace.

How is it that James is so spiritual? As he himself points out – the answer is GOD.

  • Sounds like James is just one of those people on whom the spirit is so visible… I just finished writing a term paper on Religion’s response to illness, and I was struck by the degree of spirituality in the world. I really had no idea (duh… I’m taking a comparative religion course!) how obvious it really is that we were created to connect with God. Maybe it’s just one more thing that children show easier because they are less conditioned by society?
