THE non-Victorian flavour permeating the AFL’s 2004 season intensified last night when West Coast’s Chris Judd became the Perth-based club’s first Brownlow Medallist.

Judd, who was born and raised in Melbourne and barracked for the Demons before being drafted by the Eagles in 2001, polled 30 votes to win from Adelaide captain and joint 2003 medal winner Mark Ricciuto, and Port Adelaide defender Chad Cornes.

Western Bulldogs veteran Scott West and Sydney Swans tagger Brett Kirk tied for fourth with 20 votes.

“It’s very humbling to be standing up here and … unbelievable really,” Judd said on receiving the award. Having turned 21 just 12 days ago, Judd becomes the youngest winner of the 80-year-old prize since Gavin Wanganeen won, aged 20 years and 94 days, in 1993.
