Who is the teacher?

What were you like with playground equipment when you were younger? Were you able to go from one end of the monkey bars to the other?

It was never one of my strong points. I would climb the ladder on one end then get maybe one or two rungs along the bars before dropping into the sand below.

I was watching James yesterday at a family get together as he had a go at the monkey bars.

He tried – and dropped – so he tried again – and dropped. He tried several times without success. Then he had another go and went like a rocket – hanging by his arms and making his way across the bars to the other end. Then he went to another set of monkey bars and did the same before repeating the effort on the third set.

I called him over to tell him how proud I was and put my hand on his chest. Thump thump thump. I thought his heart was about to burst through. He’d obviously used every bit of strength he had.

I was proud of the fact that he had achieved something but even more proud of the way that he didn’t give up after failing the first few of times. He just kept going.

He may only be 5, but he so often manages to teach me so much.
