Billboard Ringtone Chart

Does your mobile phone have a polyphonic ringtone?

It seems that those tacky ringtones we hear everwhere these days have been recognised as part of the music industry by Billboard Magazine.

The weekly entertainment industry publication, which tracks top record and CD sales, says it’s launching a new chart that will track the popularity of phone ringtones. The new chart, known as the Billboard Hot Ringtones Chart, will reflect the Top 20 polyphonic ringtone sales for each week, including song title, artist, previous week’s position and number of weeks on the chart.

The ringtone market has exploded in recent years, with global revenues estimated to have topped $4.71 billion in 2003, according to industry estimates.

I just wonder if the artists whose music is being replicated for the ringtones will be happy or unhappy if their track hits number one on the new chart.
