Flying High

I see that a recent survey found that nearly one in four Americans get on a plane hoping the person sitting in the next seat might be a future date or spouse.

28% saw a flight as a chance to make a new friend, 24% were hoping to meet a new love interest or a future spouse and 14% hoped to make a business contact.

It also seems that many would resort to tricks to avoid talking to someone they considered a bore. 49% said they would read, 41% would put on headphones and only 10% would be direct enough to ask to be left alone.

I don’t get to fly nearly as much as I’d like to but I’m certainly not looking for a date when I do. I don’t think Pauline would be impressed if I was. My only thoughts when I get on a plane are usually to do with what movie they’re showing and whether I’ll be able to recognise what it is they’re serving me for dinner. I’m one of the rare breed that enjoys airline food but it does take me while to work out what I’ve been served at times.

What are your first concerns when it comes to getting on a plane?
