Helpful Hint # 314

Apply sunscreen before going outside.

Well, is my face red? Short answer – yes.

Thankfully sunburn fades on me very quickly and turns into a rich dark tan, however that’s not a good reason to get burned in the first place.

I was on my bike around 6:30 Saturday morning as I headed off for my normal weekend ride. About ten of us showed up in contrast to last week’s three. Never-the-less the decision was made to go find the Barrack Street group again. I think they were moving even faster this time. At one point I was sitting on 52km/h and was in danger of being dropped by the group. I picked it up to 54km/h and stayed in touch.

After the morning ride we headed to Mt. Lawley for coffee. Mmmm.

After a delicious long black a few of us headed through Kings Park and then down to Fremantle to meet up with several other cyclists who were part of last year’s ride from Perth to Hobart. We then cycled to Hillarys for lunch.

It was only once we were at Hillarys that I noticed a slight pinkish glow on my arms. I was offered some sunscreen so I slapped it on pretty thick. The damage had already been done. The ride home just added to the effect.

I got home mid afternoon after a wonderful day out, catching up with some good friends and having cycled a whisker under 125km.

It was a wonderful day but next time I’ll put the sunscreen on first.

  • 50+km/h?! is that your average, or just a peak speed? a bunch of us ride regularly down here in rockingham, and we tend to average around the 33km/h mark, which we thought was a pretty reasonable clip.

    wow! i’m very impressed! 🙂

  • It’s certainly not an average.

There’s a section along Manning Road where the bunch seems to surge. Mostly they seem to sit between 35 and 40.

When we ride our regular route we usually sit on around 30.

  • Owww! No, sunscreen isn’t something you naturally think of at 6 in the morning. I have been caught in this way before. I did remember last weekend, but forgot the head, so came home with a sore red stripe on the top of my head where the sun shines through a ventilation hole in my helmet.

  • Well Bruce, I’m sure you would have witnessed first hand my ‘demon horns’.

When I get the sun shining through the vents in my helmet I end up with what looks like a couple of red horns on my forehead.

By the way, it was great to ride with you again on Saturday. I really enjoyed the day.
