A Tea Towell Led Economic Recovery

I see that the folk at Sainsbury’s supermarket in London claim that sales of tea towels are booming.

It’s apparently because parents use them as headdresses for their children in primary school Nativity plays.

The demand is so great that they’ve had to order extra supplies. They say it’s what’s known in the trade as the Bethlehem Boost. Their sales figures show that most Nativity play actors this year will be wearing multi-striped herringbone tea towels. Sales of a more sophisticated tea towel, with yellow, blue, brown and white stripes are also going well.

I wonder if sales of fake beards, shepherds crooks, gold, frankincense and myrrh are up too.

  • In my house tea towels are largely used and abused, I’m always in need of new tea towels, so I do hope there isn’t a shortage over here!!

I might just nip down the shops and grab a few now…..

  • Rodney, you pose one of the great questions of our time: How does the humble tea towel, mainly used for drying ones dishes and the occasional tea towel fight, become one of the most in demand items at Christmas time?

Do you think Versace, Tommy Hilfiger or even Gucci will be producing their tea towel lines next year?
