At the risk of offending smokers …

… I just had to highlight this story.

According to a recent study, smoking makes you stupid.

SMOKING has long been known to cause cancer, heart disease, impotence and so on – now, damage to your IQ can be added to the list.

The research was carried out in Scotland over a long period of time.

“Smokers performed significantly worse in five different cognitive tests than did both former smokers and those who had never smoked,” British New Scientist magazine reports in next Saturday’s issue.

“When social and health factors such as education, occupation and alcohol consumption were taken into account, smoking still appeared to contribute to a drop in cognitive function of just under one per cent.”

I suppose that as I’ve never been a smoker I don’t understand the attraction, but I keep hearing more and more evidence that confirms my choice not to smoke.

My dad gave me the best reasons to never take up the habit. It wasn’t anything he said, it was the results of being a heavy smoker that were displayed in his health.

  • LoL….that’s just….classic. I have a friend who has been smoking since she was 8 (yes…8). and she is one of the most forgetful people I know of. Sweet as can be, but even she knows that smoking and other things haven’t been the best for her. Of course, she isn’t close to quitting yet, even with a daughter that nearly died from asthma. *sigh* Great story, thanks. 🙂

  • What was the cognitive capability BEFORE the people started smoking? I question that because I can’t imagine why people start smoking to begin with…I mean, is that really smart?

Maybe the research is showing information about people who choose to take up a habit that can make them impotent, make them smell really bad with breath that is very repulsive, can ruin teeth, and/or kill them through a slow, horrendous death by emphysema or lung cancer.

I can’t understand why people ever choose to smoke the first one.

  • I see that the research was carried out in Scotland. I wonder if the researchers took this into account, and whether smokers who live in, say, Japan or China have the same drop in cognitive function. Jeez, I know I’d smoke if I lived in Scotland; I’d probably drink myself to death, too, just for something to do.

  • Rodney,

When you think about it legitamently… Smoking will help you get to heaven fast? I was thinkin about taking up the habit the other day once i thought about this! I suppose the Maker wouldn’t be too proud of this decision though?

  • I cannot understand why people smoke either? They must be weak and feeble minded or something . . . . must go now, dying for a cup of coffee.
