The skies are filled with thick smoke at the moment. A fire started in a scrap metal yard near the corner of Tonkin Highway and Collier Road yesterday afternoon and continues to burn strongly.
I cycled up to the area yesterday after work around 4:30. A very thick column of black smoke was heading directly across one section of Collier Road which was closed to traffic.
A little later I had to head out to a meeting and drove past the site. A dozen or so cars were parked on the side of the Tonkin Highway watching the firefighters. On my way home from the meeting at around 10:30 I couldn’t get quite so close. Tonkin Highway was closed for quite a distance so I had to find my way home through the back streets. As I got closer to the area I could see a bright glow as the fire continued to rage.
This morning I woke to find that the fire is still blazing. Smoke is heading right across the metro area. Roads are blocked off all around the immediate vicinity of the fire. Tonkin Highway is closed to peak hour traffic. It’s a mess.
The strange thing is, that while I wish the fire hadn’t started, that the firefighters didn’t have to battle so hard to bring it under control, that roads didn’t have to be closed, that smoke wasn’t blanketting the city, there’s still something interesting and exciting about something out of the ordinary like this happening.
