Next please …

Well, we’ve got rid of one celebration, time to move on to the next.

While we’re still basking in the afterglow of Christmas and New Year celebrations, the marketers are ready for the next big occasion. I was in a large shop a couple of days back and was astounded to see that they were stocked with dozens of bags of Hot Cross Buns. I don’t know when they first hit the shops but they’re certainly out in full force now.

Easter isn’t until the last weekend in March but it seems that we can start celebrating now.

At least with most of the Christmas goodies that appear on our shelves far too early each year we can store them away until the big day. We can even store easter chocolate but Hot Cross Buns need to be eaten fresh. That means that we’re expected to be buying and eating them for the next two and a half months.

I know that for most people the cross on top of the buns doesn’t carry the same significance as it does for many Christians but surely the bakeries can wait until it’s a little closer to the actual date before the need to make money out of a religious holiday overtakes them.

  • I couldn’t believe it when I went grocery shopping last night (6/1/05), and there at the checkout were easter eggs! Just small ones in bags, but easter eggs none the less.

  • I saw those easter eggs too – and figure it’s best to buy them NOW while they’re still fresh. Who knows how old they’ll be by March! 🙂

  • wow, I just went to the supermarket and saw Valentine’s stuff and thought that was bad enough. (I’m in the States now.) And Perth has Easter stuff out?!
