Painting pigeons

I was reading today that a Dutch farmer has painted pigeons pink and green to ward off hungry birds of prey. The strange thing is that it seems to have worked according to a Dutch newspaper.

The farmer said, “I’m crazy about the birds. Naturally, birds of prey are going to eat pigeons, but preferably not here”.

He began painting the birds with environmentally friendly, water-based paint a year ago. He says, “The colours make the pigeons seem unsuitable as prey. The birds of prey simply don’t recognise them anymore”. I’m left wondering if the pigeons even recognise each other any more. I’m concerned that they’re now speaking to each other (in pigeon of course) and saying, “Are you OK? You’re looking a little green”.

Do the pigeons get to choose their own colour? I’m sure that pink just wouldn’t suit some pigeons.

I suppose it wouldn’t matter too much what colour they were painted. When the birds of prey are circling above you wouldn’t want to be the only pigeon in the neighbourhood still going natural.
