Snap

While I was away in the last few weeks I took over 800 photos. That’s about 3 times the amount of snaps that I took in 2003 when I last visited India.

I looked through the lot on the weekend and was a little disappointed. The photos have worked out very well and tell part of the story of the journey but they fall so short in conveying the experience.

I’ve got shots of camels, donkeys, an elephant, the Taj Mahal, the Himalayas, crazy traffic, special moments with hundreds of other cyclists and many of the wonderful people that we met.

Unfortunately they don’t come with the smells, tastes and sounds that went along with every one of those moments. They don’t scream out with the contrasts of India; the extreme poverty and the magnificent richness of the personalities. They don’t convey the surreal nature of much of what we experienced.

I can tell you about the journey and I can even show you a little of it through photos, but to steal a slogan, you’ll never never know, if you never never go.
