Aussie Pope?

Have you heard that an Italian newspaper thinks that Australia’s George Pell could soon be taking up residence at the Vatican?

According to this article, conservative Italian newspaper Il Giornale has picked the Archbishop of Sydney as one of its 18 front-runners to replace Pope John Paul II.

Others are saying that he only has a miniscule chance. I suppose I’d have to agree with the doubters. I can’t see them electing an Aussie at this point.

However, I’d be interested in getting a few ideas of what you think it’d be like to have an Australian Pope. Please try to keep it respectful but give it your best shot and give us something to make us smile.

Would Catholics across the world be forced to eat Vegemite? Would the Pope-Mobile be replaced by a V8 ute? Just what would it look like to have an Aussie as the head of the world’s Catholics. It’d be wonderful to get some non-Australians commenting on this one too.

  • Well for starters he would have to be called Pope Bruce the First wouldn’t he?!
I also think that when he addresses the crowd each week, he should begin with with the word “Gday”
And definately, the pope mobile should be a Holden.

  • Well, I love the Italians, but enough on the papal monopoly! Italians think they can always do it better than everything else, and hey… if they have attitude, they shouldn’t be leading the church, right? 😉

Frankly, I’d like to see a Pope emerge from a country from Asia, Africa, or South America. It’s time for the Church to take a stance on our world problems, and a lot of our world problems have to do with hunger and poverty. Bringing in a Pope from one of these cultures would highlight the diversity of the Church, as well as bring the attention of the world to these continents in desperate need. No one ever hears about these continents unless there’s a civil war or a natural disaster, and if either is not emphasized in the news, they are immediately forgotten. The Church would certainly gain new membership from other cultures and it would definitely help other continents who need a powerful voice to speak for them.

All right, Media, see ya around. We miss you at the other place.

  • So very, very nice to hear from you Koffee. Thanks for your thoughts.

I guess I’ll have to drop in at ‘the other place’ really soon. I miss being there and I certainly miss you and many of the others.

  • you always have to keep in mind the classic adage in this regard: he who enters the conclave a pope exits a cardinal.
