Wild ride

Leaving Rottnest at 4:00 p.m. yesterday was an interesting experience. The seas were getting rougher by the moment and the rain was coming down. There were warnings posted around the island that a front was set to cross the coast overnight. It was already well and truly on the way.

When I stepped onto the ferry that would take me 19 km across the ocean back to the mainland I wondered what the ride would be like. I’d already taken a couple of travel sickness tablets just in case.

As it turned out, it was a fairly good trip. It was a good enough voyage for me to be able to sit and read a little bit more of Shaun Micallef’s book Smithereens. Within half an hour we were docking at Fremantle.

The weather certainly did turn nasty overnight. Pauline and the kids are set to return on the 10:30 a.m. ferry today. There’s a possibility that that service will be cancelled due to rough weather and so they may have to stay at Rottnest for a few more hours until things calm down. One way or another they’ll be home today and I’m certainly looking forward to that.
