A winter's tale

Today is the first day of a new season. Winter has arrived in Perth, Western Australia. Mind you it feels pretty much like the autumn day we had yesterday.

The days are getting much shorter and the nights are getting colder. Pretty soon I’m going to have to wear something more than shorts and a short sleeved cycling jersey when I’m out on my bike. Winter isn’t all that wild here in Perth. Today is forecast as fine and cloudy with a maximum of 22 degrees Celsius (72 Fahrenheit).

We get a few days with a minimum around 0 degrees Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) and I think the coldest ever Perth maximum was around 8 degrees (46 Fahrenheit). Most of the time our daytime winter temperatures are near 16 or 17 degrees (60 Fahrenheit). Snow is unheard of here. I touched snow for the first and only time when I was 40 and visiting Tasmania.

On top of the pleasant temperatures, there aren’t too many days that are too wet to ride. A rain jacket and a hot shower at the end of the ride take care of most rainy days.

Of course in the northern hemisphere summer is just beginning. If you’re seeing the start of summer, I hope it’s a good one for you.

  • When I lived in Perth (about 40 years ago) it snowed in Albany, half the population got in their cars and drove down to see it. Of course it had melted by the time they got there.

Often dreamt of coming back to see Darlington and City Beech where I went to school. Left it too bloody late!

  • Mate, 22 degrees is good for Summer in Wellington! and 16-17 would be appreciated anytime.

In saying that it was pretty nice seeing your breath in the sunshine this morning.
    Hope you’re not “freezing” 🙂
