Live Aid

Great to hear that Sir Bob has announced plans for Live 8.

It’s being billed as a repeat of 1985’s Live Aid concert and should be an amazing experience. I’m sure that as well as those who attend the 5 simultaneous concerts, millions of people will sit in front of their plasma wide screens and crank up their home theatres to do their bit for world poverty.

What I want to know is, how many of us watched the original. Did you sit in front of your telly 20 years ago watching the disastrous fashions of the 80’s paraded before the world? I know I did and I loved it. Did anyone actually get to any of the concerts?

Do you have memories of watching Live Aid ?

I remember setting up the stereo and having a few friends over. It was being simulcast on FM radio, providing us a stereo soundtrack. It was an incredible experience. It went all through the night our time and so there was a few tired bodies draped around the lounge room.

Star after star took to the stage and the telecast kept switching between the various concerts. I remember watching Ultravox doing a couple of numbers that I didn’t know. Then came the familiar opening bars of their song Vienna. Hooray! Then before the vocals started they switched to one of the other concerts. Darn.

What are your memories? Where you even alive back then? (I turned 22 that year.)

  • I was alive but barely I was 6, alas neither hubby -who was 12 or I was interested.. me cos I think I had more fun playing with toys at that point, and we didnt have much in the way of a TV.
A different age and a different time right?
(was linked to your blog on my blog, by someone who reads here.. plus of course I listen to Sonshine and in the last few weeks have heard you mention it.)

  • Hey Rodney, just popping by to check out your blog and thank you for visiting The Faith Expedition. As for Live Aid, I was 22 at the time but was living in Israel and missed it. Come by for a visit again! Blessings on your Sunday.

  • I remember this event very well. My nephew taped the entire thing from MTV.

I have since got the cd set, but alas, it cut many portions out. I am grateful to my nephew for having taped it!

Should be another great event, but its already froth with controversy.

  • Subracting my birth year from 1985 means that I would have been 9, although I suspect it was probably earlier in the year than my birthday, making me 8. Either way, I was enjoying being a kid in Werris Creek. I don’t recall watching it, or even knowing that it took place at the time.
