Royal Mail bosses in England have been forced into taking action after their postmen were repeatedly attacked by a flock of seagulls. They’ve been causing havoc in Highbridge, Somerset, where the gulls have already knocked one postman off his bike and left another running for cover.
Strangely enough, when a postwoman ran took on the round that passes the area where the gulls are raising their chicks, the seagulls left her alone.
Now postwomen are being used whenever possible to work the round, while the postmen are being swapped into safer areas.
I don’t think I’ve ever been unfairly targeted by a seagull though I do avoid cycling anywhere near magpies in spring.
Mind you, I did have an altercation with a seagull once. I was cycling along the river past the old Raffles Hotel when a particularly stupid seagull leapt off the post it had been standing on and tried to fly through the middle of my bike frame. After a short exchange with my knees it flew off again. I think we were both left wondering what had just happened.
