Motorists who sing while driving tend to concentrate more and fall asleep less than those who stay silent according to new research. However, drivers should avoid overly rousing tunes or complex rhythms which can divert attention away from the road.
Dr Nicola Dibben, a music psychologist from the University of Sheffield, says, “Singing while driving stimulates not only the mind but also the body which in turn produces heightened alertness and reduced fatigue.”
This article gives a little more information on the good doctor’s studies.
I must say that I agree with her findings. I remember in particular a very late night drive where music helped me to stay focussed on the task at hand. It was about 10:00 p.m. and I’d just finished hosting a quiz night in Katanning and had to drive almost 4 hours to get home.
I jumped in the car and put on a few CDs. By the time I started to get a little weary I put on David Bowie’s 1993 release, Black Tie White Noise. I nudged the volume a little and started singing along nice and loud. Within a few moments I was wide awake and ready to take on the world.

did you even notice that when it rains or you need to concentrate on finding your way or there is a lot of traffic etc. that any noise is too much distraction? See you on my blog i hope
You’re so right Alexandra.
I’ve turned the radio down several times when I’ve needed to concentrate at a particularly difficult intersection or if I’m not sure of the directions to where I’m going.
The other thing that amuses me is when we lean forward behind the wheel to try to get that little bit extra concentration.
I like singing too. While I drive, while I work, while I do housework chores.
Sing, hum, smile! It’s good for you!
