Kicking and Screaming

We were off to the movies last night. We saw a preview of the new Will Ferrell movie – Kicking and Screaming.

I hadn’t heard much about it before last night but I was delighted to see Robert Duvall playing one of the main characters. I think he’s a great actor. I particularly enjoyed his disturbing portrayal of a preacher in his 1997 movie The Apostle.

Kicking and Screaming is the story of a super competitive dad, played by Duvall, and his less than sporting son, played by Will Ferrell. They end up coaching opposing soccer teams.

It’s somewhat predictable but I don’t mind that in a light comedy movie. If I want to relax I don’t need my mind to be challenged too much.

There are a lot of fun moments and we all enjoyed it. It’s never going to be a movie blockbuster and no one’s going to claim an Oscar from this one, but it was a good night out. Plenty of laughs and a lot of fun.

One of the main themes was how hyper Will Ferrell’s character gets on coffee. He’s convinced to take up coffee drinking and very quickly becomes addicted in a major way. I wouldn’t say that I’m addicted but I am sitting here enjoying a big mug full of brewed black coffee. Mmmm.

  • I’m just sitting here debating whether or not to get a coffee…

Did you really enjoy “The Apostle”? I remember watching it with a friend, and we were quite dissapointed. It was a while ago, so I can’t remember exactly why we didn’t like it, but I can remember being left with a bad taste in my mouth…

Oh, thanks for wanting to play our CD…I’ll speak with my youth pastor about it, and if it’s ok with him, we may send you a copy at the end of September! 🙂

  • Enjoy is probably not the right word for The Apostle. It was the kind of movie that I left feeling glad that I’d seen it but rather disturbed by the whole subject.

Robert Duvall based the film on some real life events so I found that unsettling. I was also told by a pastor friend that it was pretty realistic in portraying some ministers and ministries.

I think that as Christians we need to be aware of the atrocious things that are done in the name of Christ.

Interesting thing is that the church scenes were filmed in a real church with a real congregation. They were told to have a service in the way they normally would. Filming kept being interupted as several church members were falling over left, right and centre being slain in the spirit.
