Memory lane

I took a trip down memory lane on Saturday afternoon. Well, it was more like Colin Road than memory lane.

We were not too far from where I grew up so I thought we should drive past the house in Scarborough where I spent the first 16 years of my life. Our old house has been vacant for many years. We left there over 26 years ago and the old asbestos place still has the same green paint job, though these days it’s somewhat faded. The house is also slowly falling apart and the ‘garden’ is overgrown with weeds.

I suppose some investor owns the property these days and they’re waiting for the right time to sell or develop. Most of the other houses in the street were bulldozed to make way for much newer homes years ago.

After driving past the old place we drove to my old primary school which seems a lot closer these days. I’m sure it was a lot further away when I used to walk there every day for seven years.

Of course there were some wonderful memories at the old place, but it’s certainly not home any more. It’s good to reminisce but it’s even better to know that you’re where you’re meant to be right now.

  • Ah … but that’s the thing. She didn’t bend down the venetian. She actually had one slat removed at eye level (while seated) so she had a permanent view from her chair. 🙂

Her house was replaced long ago. It all looks so different.

  • When I went back to Oz at Christmas I paid a visit to a house I’d shared with my grandmother for a couple of years. (My grandmother had since moved away.) I was so shocked to see how dilapidated the house was. The beautiful front garden was run to weeds, the picket fence was bent out of shape and in need of a good paint. It made me feel sad. But like you said, it makes you realise that you’re not meant to be there.

Great blog by the way. I discovered it via Blog Explosion and have now added you to my favourites.
