The battle for the black belt

I don’t know what time it started but it was very early. I woke to the sounds of James battling it out with the Rugrats on a computer game.

As he conquered more and more levels, the volume increased accordingly. And by that I don’t mean the computer’s volume. To say that he was excited would be an understatement.

In one part of the game he had previously only made it to level 9. This morning, he not only finished level 9 and moved on to level 10, but he conquered level 10 and got awarded a black belt. There was much celebration.

He doesn’t spend a lot of time playing computer games, but when he does play, he puts everything into it.

A couple of times in a different part of the game he asked me to take over and get him past a difficult section. I had to explain to him that he is better at the game than I am.

It’s pretty hard for a boy to understand that there are things that he can do better than his dad. As time goes on he’ll start to discover that there are lots of things that he will be able to do more effectively than his father. He’ll realise that there are things I can do that he’ll never be able to do but that there are so many areas of life that he will master that I could never hope to match.
