Stress test

Do you know who won the Women’s Wimbledon singles title in 1994; whose secret ingredient is code named 7X; or what year Geelong last won a premiership? They were just a few of the questions I got to ask at a quiz night on Saturday at Lakeside Recreation Centre in North Lake.

I can assure you it’s a whole lot easier asking questions at a quiz night than it is to answer them.

I just love all the sounds you get when you read out the answers after each round. There’s the cheering from various tables that got it right, there are groans from people who suddenly realise that they should have known the answer and then there’s the “I told you so” response when no one believed the one person on the table they should have listened to.

If there was ever a way to discover how people cope in a stressful environment it is the quiz night.

By the way, the answers are Conchita Martinez, Coca Cola and 1963.

  • Quiz types: the type who says, “No, NO!” to all answers proferred but doesn’t have an answer, even a guess, him or herself. Like the bus and the movie theatre, there’s somehting about the quiz night that can be read as a microcosm of society (I suppose because society participates).
