I’d have to admit that I’m not really a 7:30 Report viewer most of the time but I caught most of a special last night looking at the 1975 dismissal of Gough Whitlam’s government. Today is the 30th anniversary of that landmark event.
The special looked at the political background leading up to the sacking with a lot of old TV footage from the era before interviewing Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser. Both were interviewed separately and they certainly still disagree on the best way to handle the situation three decades ago, but they both agree on many of the issues that face us today.
It was rather obvious that the two men have developed a great respect for each other. I think it was best summed up by Malcolm Fraser after he had explained many of the ideals they now share he simply said, “Quite apart from that, I enjoy Gough’s company.”
I think it shows a lot of character for anyone who has been so opposed to someone else’s beliefs and ideas to be able to look past that to see the person behind the beliefs.

I suspect that the reason they agree on so much is that Malcolm is almost as far to the left as Gough is… (If not further.)
