What’s the plan?

I know I’ve already said a bit about New Year’s Resolutions but I reckon that the start of a new year can give us some great opportunities to shape the year ahead in a positive way.

A lot of people have given up on making resolutions because they say that, “they don’t work“. If we think that resolutions and goals are just some kind of magic self-improvment formula we’ll always be dissapointed. Resolutions don’t work but they can form part of the structure for making improvements in our lives.

Look ahead to the end of 2006. Is there some difference you want to see in your life? Some bad habit you want to lose or good habit you want to cultivate? If you want to go from A in January to Z in December, you’ll need to plot out the journey through B, C, D, E and so on until you get to where you want to be. Start with small steps.

It’s also helpful to make yourself accountable to someone else; maybe someone who wants to travel that same road or someone else close to you. You need to give them permission to help guide you towards your goal. Give them permission to pull you back into line when you need it.

Are you going to take this opportunity to make 2006 a better year than 2005? What are your resolutions or goals and how do you plan to achieve them?

One of the big ones for me is that I want to read a lot more. I’ll be planning time to sit down and read a number of books that have been on my shelf far too long.

One of the books that I read regularly is the Bible. I’ve never made it all the way through the Bible in one year and so that’s my plan this year. I have a reading plan and I’m making myself accountable to a couple of people to ensure I follow it. You can help me too if you want. Just drop me an email every now and then to see how it’s going to keep me honest.

Do you want to join me in reading through the Bible in a year? Whether you consider the Bible to be a holy book, a piece of literature or a book of myths, it remains the best selling book of all time. You certainly don’t have to be religious to read the Bible and I’m sure you’d feel richer for the experience. I’ve chosen the New Living Translation because it’s written in everyday language and it’s easy to understand.

I’ll share some of the insights I gain through the year and you can comment whether you agree with what I have to say or not. I’m always open for some lively discussion.

So what about it? Have you set your own goals? Will you join me in reading through the Bible in a year? I can provide you with a great reading plan if you want.
