A face from the past

I mentioned a couple of posts ago that Pauline and I were at the launch of the Ride for Youth on Thursday night. It was held in the Polly Farmer Room at Subaico Oval. It was a wonderful evening with a few drinks and nibbles supplied. Channel 7 presenter, Mark Gibson, was the MC for the evening and did a marvellous job.

As well as the opportunity to chat to the publicist for the event, some of the counsellors and one of the ride organisers, we got to meet up with a guy that went to Churchlands Senior High School at the same time that I did. Even though we didn’t have a lot to do with each other during our school years, it was good to catch up. He’s one of the riders that will push his pedals from Albany, in our state’s south, to Perth to raise money for suicide prevention.

As the teams were being presented I heard his name read out and I immediately looked around to see if this was the guy who went to school with me. While he may look a little different to the guy I last saw around 27 years ago, there was no mistaking that it was him.

Bevan was a very sporting kind of guy at school and I was the fat kid who avoided physical activity like the plague. He’s still very active and I’m still the fat guy but I am a lot more active these days. I suppose we now have a love of cycling in common and he seemed rather impressed with stories of my 5 crossings of Australia by bike.

I’ve never been to a school reunion but I guess I wouldn’t mind if I ever heard of one coming up. It’d be very interesting to find out what everyone has done since our school days.
