Happy birthday Alice

The original shock rocker, Alice Cooper turns 58 today.

Cooper used to sing about necrophilia and chop up baby dolls during his concerts. He was the scary rocker that parents hated.

He still records and tours with his theatrical horror show but he’s a lot more careful about the themes he uses these days.

At the height of his popularity he was a slave to alcohol and it almost destroyed his marriage. It was in the early 80s that he believes he was totally healed of his alcohol adiction and he hasn’t touched a drop since. That change came as part of a return to his faith.

Some years back he said, “Drinking beer is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy. But being a Christian, that’s a tough call. That’s rebellion.”

You can read a little more about his life change here.

In an interview about his faith Alice said, “We have to make a choice. And everybody, at some point in their lives, has to make that choice. When people say, ‘How do you believe this? Why do you believe this?’ I just say nothing else speaks to my heart. This doesn’t speak to my intellect, it doesn’t speak to my logic – it speaks right to my heart and right to my soul, deeper than anything I’ve ever thought of. And I totally believe it. That being said, I’m not a very good Christian. I mean, none of us are ever ‘good’ Christians. That’s not the point. When you’re a Christian, it doesn’t mean you’re gonna be good, it means you’ve got a harder road to pull.”

Happy birthday Alice.

  • Thanks for your comment and helpful suggestion on my blog, Rodney. I had to have the Geek Squad come and finish setting up my new computer after I got hung up. The guy took the hard drive out of the old one and transferred the documents (word docs, photos, etc.); but I don’t THINK the internet favorites files will be available. I’m gonna check it out though. I like your blog.

  • Hi Joann

His official website and all the other references online say he was born on February 4, 1948. I think his wild days just make him look older. 🙂

  • That is fascinating about Alice Cooper, I had absolutely no idea. I think, though, that it’s somehow easier for those who have really sinned to get to Christ, as opposed to those who have just kinda sinned. (Yes, I know it’s all the same–but it’s not felt the same.) Most people prefer to just think, “I’m not that bad, I’m mostly good.” But when a person all-out debauches themselves, it’s much less easy to believe that.

  • It’s fun having him live here in Phx. He’s a DJ on 93.3 FM, “Nights with Alice Cooper.” It’s not like I see him or anything, but after all those years of blowing through the doors on the last day of school with “School’s Out” pounding in my brain…ah, good times.

    Peace.

  • That is an awesome quote by Alice Cooper. Really good stuff.

    And to Sarah…

Jesus puts it this way, “…those who have been forgiven much… lovest much.”

But I would say that it is usually those people who have realized how sinful they are. There are those who, by some standards, are fairly good, yet they recognize the sinfulness and deceitfulness of their own hearts, and realize how much they have been forgiven.

  • I feel terrible for not posting Alice’s birthday on my Classic Rock site. I will do so now.

I love what you shared about him. Have you ever read the book “The Rock and Roll Rebellion”? The author is a friend of mine so it’s a special book to me personally, but I think you would really like it and his second book which is called “Faith, God and Rock n Roll”. Author is Mark Joseph. There is a chapter on Alice in one of the books but I can’t remember which one offhand…
