Indian Idol

American actor and performer Will Smith is apparently very keen to see the Taj Mahal on his first trip to India. He’s there for a week to launch a new English language movie channel. I do hope he gets the opportunity to get to Agra and see the Taj Mahal. It is a truly amazing structure.

I was there around this time last year. It was raining on the day we visited so we had to be very careful. Wet marble can be a little slippery. We saw a number of people slip as they went up and down the steps to the main building. I took this picture on that day. From memory this is from around the back of the building. One of the other things Will is doing in India is making a guest appearance on Indian Idol. I saw parts of the grand final of Indian Idol last year. It was all strangely familiar. It all looked and felt very much like Australian Idol, same graphics, same theme music, just with a cast of Indians.

I found myself looking at the judges and trying to decide which one was playing the part of Marcia, which one was Mark, and who got to be the nasty judge. We were in my favourite restaurant at the time and everyone was focused on the TV to see which of the two finalists would become India’s Idol.

As humans there are some things that we all have in common. Strangely enough, it seems that the Idol TV show is one of them.

  • I love it when western celebrities go to India. It just helps the general masses in the West to see India as a place that has so much to offer….and see it as an interesting place, not just a third-world country (which I believe it is not anymore).
Don’t know if I made sense, but that was my $0.02.

    Thanks, Sumit, an Indian.
